Free screenings for bowel cancer

Post by trevnhil »

The Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (Pasykaf) on
Tuesday said it will be collaborating with laboratories around the
republic to offering free bowel screenings as part of an awareness
campaign for the prevention and timely diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

Pasykaf said that a series of labs will offer free bowel screenings in
the form of FOB tests to men and women over 45 years old.

Some more information about the Pasykaf scheme:

‘Althea’, is the management team of gastrointestinal cancers created by PASYKAF in 2016 to counter the rising trend in incidents of this type of cancer (colon, pancreas, stomach, liver and esophagus) that is being recorded in Cyprus over the past decade, we are carrying out the Prevention and Management of Gastrointestinal Cancer.

Sorry about the labs not being in the article. I have added them now, and I went to 'Synlab' on the road where the General Post office is. They are closed today though as it is a bank holiday, but they are open on Saturday

This is excellent to hear.

We in UK get contacted at 60 to ask if we want to receive our first NHS bowel test through the post.

After that, I think it's every 2 or 3yrs. I've had two so far but can't recall if my second was last year or this year...

You need to collect a sample phial from the lab and I needed nothing for that. I am going this morning with my ID card and Yesy card, but I was not told what to take for ID

These tests aren´t very sensitive. Therefore, the official recommendation in Germany is to have an additional colonoscopy done at the age of 55 already (and every 10 years thereafter). I must admit that I´ve so far managed to resist the temptation, though.

At least having a free test paid for by the government is better than no test at all...
Hopefully my results will be clear. If they are not, then is the time to seek more advice..

I took the sample in this morning before 8am and I will receive the results by email..

We collected ours today from Synlab. We have to take the samples in by 11.30 on Monday and results will be through later the same day. Very easy process.

Thanks trevhil. We took our samples in today before 11.30 a.m., and had our results through by email an hour ago. One of ours needs further examination so it's a good thing we went along.

I am glad that you took advantage of the screening. Like you I had the results by email today. Mine were 'all clear'.
At least you are aware that further investigation is advisable..
