It’s a sign of the times in Shipping and has been happening for years. This was on always going to happen when they registered the ships under a different flag.
As long as the Indian / Philippino who are arguably higher qualified / trained as they are and willing work for considerably less than UK / European labour then it’s no brainier when the Company is losing money as they are.
Edit. The majority of the staff laid off today, as well as receiving a generous payoff, will also be reemployed as agency staff.

Who owns P&O Ferries?

The company is owned by Dubai-based logistics giant DP World who purchased P&O Ferries back in 2019.
According to UK Ports, DP World is a “leading enabler of global trade”, and is recognised as an integral part of the supply chain.
The worldwide company has a team of more than 36,500 employees from 103 countries and works closely with governments, shipping lines and other important constituents.
Is DP World linked to Russia?
DUP MP Jim Shannon said in a statement today: "I understand that 40 per cent of the holdings of P&O Ferries is owned by a Russian company."
According to their website, DP World signed an agreement for the Northern Transit Corridor in July 2021.
In a statement released at the time of the announcement, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World said: “DP World supports Russia's efforts to diversify trade flows between Asia and Europe.
“The Northern Transit Corridor holds out the prospect of shorter transit times between East and West.”
The agreement was signed in St Petersburg by Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, and Aleksey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom.

That’s a cop out answer. If somebody asks you to clarify something you should be able to cite your source.

If you live in Cyprus then you should know that most of the problems in the ports are caused on one side by DP World (the now owner) cutting costs by hitting the workers. (or introducing modern practices, depending on who you vote for!)

Re: P&O Ferries
It's strange that all the replacement Agency staff were able to obtain work visas from the Home Office so they could enter the UK even though the government knew nothing prior to the sacking of 800 British workers.
How did the Agency workers qualify for visas on a point based immigration system?

It just means your comment counts for squat. If two people google something it doesn't follow that they will get the same results. If you are quoting from a news source, just include a link. Otherwise it is just fake news.

I think the government knew more about what was going on than they're letting on.

Does the left hand know what the right hand is up to in this government. Shapps has a bit of a history for misleading people. The Aquila wrote: ↑Sat Mar 19, 2022 9:46 am or perhaps not….

Another point is, why was it the the French P&O staff weren't given their notice unlike the 800 British staff.
As I said in an earlier post, how did 800 Colombians obtain UK work permits without the government knowing, it usually takes several weeks to process a work visa.

If you run a multinational business like this, the UK is always seen as a soft touch when it comes to redundancies and laying people off. By comparison, French employment law is very robust in the favour of the employee, and once you're employed, you're almost untouchable.Another point is, why was it the the French P&O staff weren't given their notice unlike the 800 British staff.
I know this from personal experience. Whenever there is some cost-cutting to be done, UK employees are always considered first as they are by far the easiest to lose. The French are just too much hassle. In certain circumstances, you can pretty much lose UK employees immediately. To sack people in France takes months, in some cases years, and the ongoing associated costs are huge by comparison.

Wow! Them's fighting words! The civil servant who wrote that letter deserves promotion. The Secretary of State should get a pat on the head from the Prime Minister for allowing the letter to be sent and to be published.
