Cyprus produced 543,000 tons of solid waste in 2020

In Cyprus in 2020, according to figures by CyStat, the total amount of municipal solid waste produced amounted to 543,000 tons, compared to 571,000 in 2019, recording a decrease of 4.9%.

Of the 462,000 tons managed in 2020, 78.8% was disposed in landfills, 18.3% was recycled, 1.2% was used for compost purposes and 1.7% was used for energy recovery.

According to data from Green Dot, in 2021 12,514 tons of PMD, 9,889 tons of paper and 5,963 tons of glass were recycled, a total of 29,727 tons. In 2020, a total of 27,319 tons of waste were recycled.

In 2020, the average municipal waste generation per capita in the European Union was 505 kg. In Cyprus, the per capita production of municipal waste reached 609 kg, which is one of the highest among EU member states.Denmark has the highest production of municipal waste per capita (845 kg), followed by Luxembourg (790 kg), Malta (643 kg), Germany (632 kg) and Cyprus (609 kg).

The figures for Denmark, Luxembourg and Germany are not relevant because they all have high degrees of waste recycling to produce heat and or electricity

Until I started to read the article I thought the topic was about solid bodily waste (aka excrement).

The good news is that I see more people at the Green Points than I used to when I visit, which is fairly frequently. And the vast majority of them are Cypriots.

We over the eastern end have a pick up from everyone's house once a week, we separate, plastics, paper, tins etc, and I can honestly say every house in the area has a blue sack out side of their homes ready for collection every thursday.

Sadly in the west of the island is the Paphos district I see little in the way of separating things out into different bags or boxes or even collecting points.
But as far as I know, every house has a rubbish collection Twice a week. Some houses do have to take rubbish to a communal bin, but again these are emptied twice a week .

We have a rubbish collection from the council twice a week, the third collection for recycling is by a private company.

This reminds me back in the mid 90s our local council dump was sold to a private company , rubbish was put in designated areas and some was recycled . Burnable rubbish was minced into a pulp and fed into furnaces , the furnaces made steam which in turn drove steam turbines which fed electricity into the grid. The furnaces had special chimneys to clean the smoke so it was not polluting, the company were very proud of their achievements and profits too ! All that 25years ago ! Cyprus does that with only 1.7% of its rubbish ! Guess chucking it in a hole in the ground is easier !

Isnt burning rubbish, banned in the UK and Europe now?

It is not banned in either the UK or Europe, provided that the waste gases conform to the regulations. I don't know the exact number but I think there are about 400 waste to energy plants in Europe that burn whatever they are given. Worldwide, there are over 1000 such plants in operation (even in China which is planning 400 plants, Indonesia, Malaysia and, above all, Singapore which has five plants working. They are a very useful source of cheap heat and electricity. Cyprus should have two such plants, but doesn't!
