It does wash off Pete, but that's not the issue. The fact that you get brown scum on the insides of cups/mugs indicates that there is chalk and/or other contaminants in the water, which if you're a fussy old fart like me, means that the taste of your tea or coffee will be degraded to some extent. No point in paying extra for delicate flavours (like Earl Grey), herbal teas or quality coffees, if you're going to use water which contains pollutants (for want of a better word).
