Rules for a bonfire !!!

Last Autumn I chopped down some trees and lopped some boughs off others.. The pieces / branches that I didn't give away for firewood, I carried down to a spare plot of land we have, and I built a bonfire.

All the greenery has died now and shortly I thought I would light the bonfire and get rid of everything.
But I had read somewhere that you have to have a permit for a fire..
So I went to the local fire station and they confirmed that I needed a permit from our Council offices.

However it is not that simple... First I was asked how old I was.. ie was I over 65 ? Yes by lots of years..
Apparently, it needs two people under 65 to be there. You also have to dig a 'moat' all around the bonfire and fill it with water.. I gave up at that point and decided to make a little fire away from all the tree branches and just keep adding onto the little fire as it dies down
I do have a pressurised water supply that I can have on standby for safety reasons..

What a ridiculous situation! What about the little old farmers who suddenly decide to bonfire their rubbish (or their field?)
Maybe they are exempt...

Its not a ridiculous situation at all, its these, little old farmers who were responsible for some of the tragic fires that swept Cyprus last year.

Find yourself an old oil drum, take the top off, and slowly burn the stuff.

And if you do that on a rainy day, nothing will happen as many locals do the same...but don't wait too long as the dry season comes soon.

Try any garage workshop they buy their oil in big drums, a small cutting disc will take the top off easy.

Have a drive round your local industrial estate, if you see some out side, pop in and ask they might give you one, many years ago , I was on the parent teacher association for my kids school, we were doing a big BBQ for charity, we did what I suggested we went to the local industrial estate, when we explained what we needed it for, the guy told us to pop back the next day, not only did he cut it in half for us, he steam cleaned the inside for us, we even had trouble giving him a bottle of scotch for his troubles he didn't want to take it.
