Home improvement grants

Post by Pamc »

Does anyone have any info on what grants are available for some home improvements for properties built pre 2007 and how to apply? TIA :)

Good luck with this, I have not heard anything about it.. 2007 is not that old a property, so interesting to see the replies.

The only grants I can think of, were for old village houses, which had strict rules on what could be done to them

I don't know whether the date of the property is relevant, so much as the way it is constructed. Although I don't believe that it is written into the regulations, but I understand from one of my suppliers that you need to do more than one thing to qualify for a grant. As examples, you may consider improvements like double glazing in UPVC frames, wall insulation, roof insulation, photovoltaic electrics etc but it would help you greatly if you apply simultaneously for at least two of them. I have no proof but the scuttlebutt tells me that it may take two or more years for you to receive the grant after your new installations have been approved (if they are!).

In my case, I had previously installed UPVC double glazing and roof insulation and was wanting to do wall insulation. The expert examining my case advised me (partially because of my old age) not to apply for the grant but to have it done under my own steam, if I could afford it. It seems that my application for photovoltaics was being treated separately but would also take a long time before receiving the grant.

My general advice would be to engage an expert to make your applications. Otherwise it is possible you may find yourself struggling in the middle of a can of worms! :-) :-)

Home improvement grants
Thank you for your replies and advice.
I have had my flat roof insulated under my own steam. I have read a number of articles about grants which quoted applicable to properties built prior to 2007. I would like to replace my alluminium badly fitted windows before they fall out as I fear any heating goes straight out of them!
I was also led to believe that the contractor doing the work would make the application but from your replies I could be flogging a dead horse! Thanks again. 😀

I would enjoin you to get those windows changed as soon as you can. You will find that UPVC windows will also reduce external noise coming into your living room. This could be done as part of a project to do two or three things at the same time if you cannot afford to have them done privately. Otherwise, go for the government scheme but don't expect your grant to come as soon as you're ready for it.

If you are going to do just the one thing, then a good UPVC supplier will probably do all the paperwork for you. Your horse could be very much alive and kicking! What may be more difficult would be if you were having two or three modifications done under the one application; in all probability you would have to have different suppliers for each. Alternatively, engage a qualified environmental engineer who would undertake to supervise the lot for about 15% of the total cost; this would then become a turnkey job.
