It is not normal in my experience.. We asked a digger / wagon driver in the village to get us "Soil for Flowers" He got us two wagon loads and spread it out for us

Re: Top soil
We have ordered bags of top soil from a garden centre in Lemba and it was excellent. We have also had mulch from the green point in Kissonerga which was also excellent.
Re: Top soil
'Sunspot, the soil in Trev's photo, known as 'red' soil, is a soil seen on good agricultural land.
Its only down side is that when it rains, it becomes heavy and sticky. To counteract this, we used to mix it with a little sand and fine gravel, which helped to keep it more 'open', as this also helped drainage after rain fall. Also any form of well rotted compost or animal manure from farms helps feed the soil.

Re: Top soil
Mouse, that sounds about right. The Romans made some very fine pottery which is red in colour called Samian ware. Found in the villas of probably the more wealthy citzens.

Re: Top soil
Not the same as what is used for terracotta pots, red soil is found mainly in the East of the island, and the villages around Paralimni are known as the red soil villages, that's where most of Cyprus potatoes are grown the red appearance comes from the mineral deposits in the ground.,
