"No matter how many times you add up the figures, just 28% of the UK gets to take us out of the EU by a small majority"

You really will have to explain to me what version of democracy you would like to see in place to meet with your approval?

The system we used saw 52% of those who voted choosing to Leave- that is a majority by any known mathematical criteria?

The turnout was extremely high by modern standards 72.2% and significantly higher than that seen for the last general election- so no problems there then ? If the referendum isn't valid then neither is the Parliament

The terms for the referendum were set by Parliament where remain MP's were in a majority - they were happy with the demographics of the referendum and passed the necessary legislation by 6 to 1, effectively handing the matter over to that part of the population of the UK deemed eligible and responsible enough to vote by Parliament themselves- so all hunky dory there too surely?

If you are going to try and belittle the wishes of the 52% majority by describing them as only 28% of the population, then you are inferring everyone under 18(including new born babies) should have a vote as well as all foreign nationals living in the UK? I suppose in the ultimate democracy that might be fine (although we might end up with Adele as pm) We could even give pregnant women and soon to be fathers an additional vote too ?

All that last paragraph is of course utter nonsense- the terms of the referendum were clearly proposed, discussed, set and approved in a eminently sensible and transparent manner and the result should be respected. To say otherwise is undemocratic in the extreme

The only "democratic" elections where one party gets 99% of the vote on 100% turnout (which appears to be the only result you would consider valid) are those organised by Robert Mugabe et al  and of course by your own logic only 24% voted to stay in

Looks like Jamie Oliver has seen the light:
Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is closing six of his 42 UK Jamie's Italian restaurants.
The Aberdeen, Cheltenham, Exeter, Tunbridge Wells and in London, the Ludgate and Richmond outlets are all scheduled to close soon.
The move will affect 120 staff, whom the company said it would try to place in other parts of the chain.
The company said that the market was "tough" and the uncertainties caused by Brexit had intensified the pressures.
The price of ingredients bought in Italy has gone up because of the fall in the value of the pound against the euro since the vote to leave the EU.

Hilarious- the Aberdeen one has closed for various reasons, but the main one was it sold overpriced cack. I don't know of anyone who ever ate there and had anything good to say about the "experience"

Or see another article here in the comic... ;)
Jamie Oliver is all over the BBC today after announcing that he is to close six of his Italian restaurants due to “post-Brexit pressures”.

This is not the first time Jamie has blamed the economy for having to shut down his restaurants. In 2014 he closed three of his three of his four Union Jacks eateries after claiming they were “no longer sustainable in the current challenging climate”. Nothing to do with the dire reviews panning the over-priced food on sale.

Then Jamie’s Italian in Istanbul came a cropper, filing for bankruptcy just 14 months after it opened. Anyone who has had the misfortune of forcing down a distinctly un-Italian meal at a soulless Jamie’s Italian will agree with the many, many reviews panning the chain. As Tanya Gold wrote of his “boastful, narcissistic” restaurant in Soho:
“The pasta is well-seasoned but overcooked; the Crispy Italian-Spiced Duck Leg has never dreamt of Italy, let alone quacked there… All this is a hoax inflicted on the clients… by Oliver’s fame… an ‘Italian-Style’ Harvester selling overpriced food that does not know where it is from.”

Is it that the economy keeps conspiring to force Jamie to close his restaurants? Or is it that overly-salted, overly-priced food isn’t popular with punters…

Perhaps the food was just shyte eh...?

Which leads me on to ask the question.....

Has anyone yet been to the new Jamie Oliver Italian restaurant which opened in Nicosia not too long ago?

Don't worry I'm sure there'll be another "Brexit blamed" pile of drivel along soon- I'll leave that one to you.

A rise in the UK minimum wage might see a few more "Jamie's" closing as well ;)

Good article...

The thing that has worried me the most was the way that the developer's NPLs were 're-negotiated' (i.e. kicked down the road) recently...

The developer that built my house owes millions on NPLs yet they have all magically been 'cleared' and huge new projects in Limassol started.

NPLs must come back to bite us eventually...

Are you not in on the amnesty on PP? Strange as many are...maybe you chose not too?

Btw I don't attack I disagree, you should try it. :D

You are not disagreeing you are attacking, calling them plonkers and despicable. Unnecessary, debate their politics if you can.

Perhaps you could point out the chaos; cut 'n' paste an article from the Guardian perhaps...?

BTW, I've never been banned from PP so have no need for the amnesty. I remain a member there and also at cyprus-forum. I've only ever been banned from CL - twice in fact...

A good article in today's Sunday Mail by someone well-placed to comment. Incidentally, I am delighted to see quality postings on this lovely new forum by Conoflex, who seems to me to be a re-incarnation of McIngy!(obviously a fisherman!)
Further to your point (cyprusgrump) re. developers, I am not happy about the seemingly abandoned development just past Stephanie Village going up to Tala, which was half-built by the same firm who under a different name are now busy building up at Minthis Hills!

I have to disagree that the terms of the referendum were clearly proposed discussed and set out...they just were not...on both campaigns they were lacking...but that's by the by now...too late and nothing to be done...

As for the voting...

While Brexit likely does not reflect the sentiment of the entire electorate the result of the referendum reflects how democracy works, to a point..and has prompted a great deal of speculation about whether the outcome really does represent the will of the entire electorate. Citizens and commentators have asserted that the result may well have been different had various groups of potential voters gone to the polls in greater numbers.

But they didn't...so we're stuck with the result....you need to accept that there are millions of people who will not accept the outcome...as 1.2 million is a very small majority ...

Btw I'm not getting into an arguement with you McIngy I've seen your vitriol against Lloyd in the past...it's not pretty...

We must agree to disagree that's it...

Indeed...

The developer I mentioned has left a half-finished development in Pissouri with the (few) residents having no hope of getting their title deeds...
