CovPass mobile app coming soon

Post by galexinda »

Instead of having to carry a vaccination card or a negative Covid-19 test in print form, people in Cyprus will soon be able to download a mobile application with which they can prove they have received the jab or taken a PCR or rapid test, the permanent secretary of the deputy ministry for research, innovation and digital policy said on Thursday.

Speaking to Alpha News, Stelios Himonas said the application, called “CovPass” has been submitted for approval to the AppStore and to Google Play and is set to be released in the upcoming days.

I downloaded Green Pass, its from Czech Republic and works fine. My info is on there which is very handy as it saves me carrying paper.

If you take the EU developed ReOpen app as an example, it’s developed by the EU and, for Apple App Store at least, in the privacy details section of the app on the App Store you’ll see that no data is collected about you or your useage, Apple are pretty strict on developers stating what data they collect and track these days. I don’t know if it’s the same for Android devices.

I imagine a lot of apps like these from private developers are going to pop up so it’s up to the individual to check these and decide what they are happy with or not.

Not planning any overseas trips so I have removed the Green Pass from my mobile phone.

Happy to show paper format but I have it in a Ziplock bag to make it easier to sanitise should anyone else handle it.

Is this app also going to suffice for EU travel or is Cyprus producing two apps? I'm getting confused...

It’s my understanding that there will be one app, called CovPass. The digital version that you may have already read about is simply a file that can be downloaded from the EU website, there’s a link on the Cyprus Press office COVID webpage.

If you wish, You can either print a copy off or store it digitally as a PDF and store it on your mobile until the official app is available. There other apps that will let store the downloaded document this but many of these are privately developed apps, personally I prefer to wait until the EU developed Gov app is available. Personally I have a paper copy and have store a digital copy on a cloud storage service so I can access it if I want to.

To be honest, I’m not sure why I bothered as at the moment the digital certificate is only to be used for travel rather than as evidence for SafePass, but I’m sure that will change soon, and I have no plans to travel for a while yet.

This is the link to the Press Office COVID page, click on the orange box to get your digital certificate if you need it.

Hope this all helps.

Thanks Ian, it does. Being able to use one app for both travel and domestic use would be useful.

I'm pretty sure that the official German app is already called CovPass though. The government might need to come up with a new name.

I think it it will be a generic app with each Gov in EU responsible for the data feeds.

That’s what’s I’d do anyway 😂

I think that orange box is the link I used. And it worked on 1 July already. However, I´m not sure whether my surname hasn´t been mixed up with my given names. Is it okay for the given names being put before the surname?

Could you please tell a thicko like my self, what the Swiss app is , thanks
