Fire - suggestion

Post by lotus »

Perhaps a good idea for folks to get together with neighbours to have a plan of action if a fire starts up nearby, make sure hoses are good and long enough, spades and shovels ,clearing anything that's likely to burn close to properties etc,I realize some haven't immediate neighbours so more important for them to be extra careful and ready

From my recent experience....Had hose out damping down before the fire got too close, but unfortunately the water pressure dropped considerably due to everyone doing the same......
But better than nothing, it's truly frightening the speed with which fire can travel........

It certainly is amazing/frightening how fast the fire can travel.. We had a fire here on our land just a few years ago.. I tried my best with a feeble hosepipe but I was overwhelmed and had to call the fire brigade.. They sent the small truck first with a tank on the back and a couple of pressure hoses.. Fortunately, they could drive past our bungalow and onto the rear car park where the fire was..
The Fire engine from the Stroumbi fire station arrived a little later. They were successful in dousing the blaze that had got to the trees.. I learnt a lesson that day as the fire was my fault.
We have had other fires near the house in fact within a few yards of the front gateway.
Now I make sure that my extra-long hosepipe is working and we have it connected to the pressurised water supply.. I test it from time to time, but hopefully it will not be needed

Home owner with a swimming pool could use its water in case of emergency using a strong electric pump (>1000 W) and long hose. Alternative, if the pipe end of the pool filter is in open area, then prepare it for easy connection of a long 1,5" pipe which reaches all places around the house. This is very powerful and got a lot of water pressure in position "waste" at the manifold. However it needs working electricity which is sometimes a question in case of large fires nearby....

We have such a pump. Just in case.
