Opinion polls - who are the participants?

Post by Dominic »

I was browsing the yougov site, seeing if I could find any data on the forthcoming Batley and Spen By-Election. I couldn't, but from figures elsewhere it looks like Labour might be getting spanked again.

However, I noticed another series on the site, called trends. The same question is asked, every six months. They then graph it.

What amazed me, was the amount of Don't Knows. Here's one example. The question was:

Is The Mirror more favourable towards Labour/the left or the Conservatives/the right?

These were the results:

49% - Don't know
21% - Labour strong
17% - Labour
Others all under 4%

Half the respondents didn't know that the Mirror was left wing. So why do any of us care about who they think will win the next election, or England vs Germany, or anything for that matter?

The media has changed so much with the advent of social media et al that perhaps the “newspapers” are no longer relevant ? Up to date news is now on Twitter,Facebook etc. If the younger generation are the more prevalent participants of the polls then it’s no real surprise.

I've never been asked to participate in one of these opinion polls. I feel almost disappointed. I often wonder how/where they are done though.

The Daily Mail website is 12 most popular site in the UK, according to this data:

Yet according to Yougov, nearly half don't know it is right wing!

The Tory candidate is expected to win the by-election, as George Galloway has split the left-wing vote

You can sign up for the YouGov site and they will send out Polls whenever they do them.
Ticking away, the moments that make up a dull day.
