will we get the green light

Post by Mike1940 »

Hopefully the PM of the UK will authorise travel for those with two vaccinations for covid. The NHS app which shows the dates of the two vaccinations is identical to the the European app. Hopefully Cyprus will let us in if they go from amber to green but even without the green listing we will be able to travel from the UK with no quarantine on return or similar tests.

You never know - But on BBC1 news this morning Simon Calder predicted Malta, Madeira and six Greek Islands. He didn't think the Balearics would be added either.

Hardly surprising that we failed to make the UK's green category. Unfortunately, the number of cases of Covid has gone up substantially since last Monday, from 67 to 167 yesterday. The cause is thought to be the arrival of the 'Delta' variant. Plus of course a section of the population who aren't following the basic social distancing and mask wearing dictats. 15 teenagers were reported to have had an end of term party. One person had Covid symptoms on the day of the 'end of term party, the rest have since developed it. Also 6 members of a brides family have tested positive for the virus. Probably just 2 examples. Plus each person concerned may have infected how many more people?

Definitely two rules, and the conservative voters are not really in their club, though they want to be.
Isn't it ironic

Actually, in fairness to BJ, had he not done so UEFA would have held the matches away from the UK, from what I read. So the main benefactors will have been football supporters.

During the 9 test cases ( in the UK) for opening venues which were attended by 58000 people there were only 28 cases of which 11 were classed as infectious - a return of 0.00005%. So there is no reason why things cannot be opened up if carried out in with the correct protocols.

However, I doubt a wedding for say 100 people in the Uk (or anywhere else) would adhere to the same strict protocol.

Germany & France are now pushing for an EU ruling to quarantine British travellers from UK to have to quarantine, so despite the deluded thinking of some it actually has nothing to do with Boris wanting people to spend their money in the UK. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/20 ... ace-masks/

Boris Johnson will host Angela Merkel at Chequers next Friday, as the German Chancellor continues to lobby other EU leaders in a bid to have them impose a bloc-wide quarantine on British travellers.

Ms Merkel and Emmanuel Macron are attempting to pressure countries that rely on British tourism to agree to restrictions amid concerns about the Delta variant being imported.

Veronique Trillet-Lenoir told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that discussions were ongoing about taking a "harmonised" approach to travel rules with "third countries" such as the UK.

"Clearly Germany, France and Portugal have already said that they needed a quarantine; what I really would like is a harmonised and co-ordinated manner, although I understand that the vision is not the same for southern and northern countries in Europe," she added.

They were in place for very good reasons. Now that Britain is cautiously opening, Europe are talking of extra measures. Yet some take every opportunity to blame Boris for everything. That was the Lou t I was trying to make.

I dont agree that they were very good reasons, nor does the travel industry
The travel industry don't, obviously. As to you not agreeing, personal choice.

Dearest Lloyd, take a look at this article, then get back to me. Sorry to once again poke even more holes in your colander like argument. By the way, Boris isn't my friend, but I shall give you 3/10 for that pathetic little jibe. I guess it comes from your ongoing bitterness at a democratic process you couldn't be bothered to take part in.... ;-)
"As barely a third of European countries meet targets to track concerning Covid-19 variants, diagnostics and genomics companies are scrambling to help them tackle this challenge.

New strains of the Covid-19 coronavirus are sweeping Europe as vaccine distribution efforts roll on. These variants often gain traction when mutations let them become more virulent or spread faster than the original strain. Some strains could also eventually become resistant to current vaccines.

Regularly sequencing circulating Covid-19 strains allows variants of concern to be spotted early on. The sequences can also be used to adapt vaccines to future strains.

However, just nine of the 28 countries in the European Union and European Economic Area have reached the target amount of sequencing recommended by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). By the end of February, the minimum of 10%, or 500 random samples sequenced per week was only met by Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, and Norway.

“We have quite a number of European countries that are not … at a level that would enable them to rapidly identify and monitor, and therefore control, variants of concern,” the ECDC’s Head of Surveillance, Bruno Ciancio, told the European Parliament’s Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee this week.

The views of the travel industry should have no part to play in a Government's response.

Fact is, cases are going up in both the UK and Cyprus. More has to be done to encourage vaccinations. Paphos has had the most vaccinations, and has the least new cases, proportionally. This is not just a coincidence.

It's just a notion of mine but I have the idea that the period of mass package tourism may be coming to an end. I would imagine the thousands of flights per year just for tourism may not be sustainable given the worlds desire to combat climate change.
