We are told that we need 6 months left on your passport to travel from UK to CY, but we have also just discovered that it needs to have been issued less than 9½ years ago!

It's because the policy of an early passport renewal used to result in the additional months being added to the passport. However, this was changed and stopped in September 2018.
The extra months no longer count and it's a straight 10 years from the date of issue. Even if the passport indicates differently, you have to look and count only from the issue date.
