The famous pink pelican at Paphos harbour called ‘Kokos’ has died of old age, his owner told Philenews.

Because of the coronavirus, ‘Kokos’ was self-isolating for almost a year at comfortable special facilities set up by owner Andros Papiris who runs Pelican Restaurant in the harbour area.

‘Kokos’ who starred in many local and international TV reportages on the coastal holiday city – including a recent one by BBC – was 25 years old.

“The lockdown restrictions did not stop him from getting on with his routine, including taking a bath in the home swimming pool – something that he loved,” Papiris also said.

“Unfortunately, at the age of 25 ‘Kokos’ had reached the highest life expectancy of these species, you could see signs of old age in him but he passed away peacefully,” he added.

Hope he’s not replaced. I always felt so sorry for him with his clipped wings and wooden cage around the back of the restaurant. RIP Kokos

He probably didn't know of any different way of life, But as previously stated - Wings clipped right back, never been in contact with flocks of his own species to able to fish and feed as natural and kept in a cage most of the time so yes he was in prison until his keeper decided to bring him out for the amusement of humans just like a dancing bear - So I also hope he is not replaced, and if he is something should be done about it.

Fully agree with the above. Wild birds and animals are not pets and shouldn't be treated as such.

I didn't know about the cage, I assumed he moved about freely, then I take back what I first said.
