Stop cock

Post by WHL »

Had a chat with my plumber yesterday, and he told me about one of his clients, they share their time between Cyprus and the UK, whilst in the UK, a mains pipe under their sink burst, flooding their house here in Cyprus, their nextdoor neighbour, when he came home from work, saw the water coming out from under their front door, and went into their drive and shut the water off, this was after many hours, and the damage was over fifteen thousand euros, their insurance company refused their claim, telling them that as they were abroad they should of shut off the water at the mains stop cock, before leaving the property empty, Be careful folks.

I suppose it is a warning for all of us to check the wording in our insurance policies.. If we re going away i do turn off the water.

Whenever we leave Cyprus, we always turn off at the mains and the header tank.
Ticking away, the moments that make up a dull day.

It is a risk you are taking, but you know if something in the house leaks it will go on leaking until you return home..

We also had a flexible pipe burst causing us alot of damage, that taught me a lesson, as flexible pipes have a time life, so every three years now, my plumber comes round, changes all the flexible pipes on taps and changes any little stop cocks that have seized up, usually by build up of stone in the water, he also put in a cut off switch in our kitchen, which is wired to our pump on the pressurised system, so when we leave the house we can switch the pump off, so if we get a leak the water dosnt gush out.

I have taken the precaution of having all those 'flexible' pipes to the kitchen sink, cloakroom, washing machine and bathroom replaced with new ones. But thanks for the suggestion to consider having separate stopcocks for the mains fitted to the house and to the garden. I have to leave garden supply on when the water computers are being used.

Good idea HIC, if I ever get back to Cyprus I will look at getting the extra valve fitted.
