Cyprus among countries with controversial AstraZeneca vaccine batch
Cyprus is one of 17 EU countries which received a controversial batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine that Austria has already suspended after a person died 10 days after vaccination.
This is what a Health Ministry press release said on Thursday adding that by it was keeping its consignment on hold as a precaution and waiting for final confirmation.
Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden are the countries which have received the batch numbered ABV5300.
Austrian health authorities have suspended it after the person who died was diagnosed with multiple thrombosis and died 10 days after vaccination.
At the same time, a second person was hospitalised with pulmonary embolism, that is blockage in arteries in the lungs, after being vaccinated. The latter is now recovering.
As of Tuesday, March 9, two other reports of thromboembolic event cases had been received for this batch, according to the press release.
There is currently no indication that vaccination has caused these conditions, which are not listed as side effects with this vaccine.
Batch ABV5300 comprises one million doses of the vaccine.
Although a quality defect is considered unlikely at this stage, the batch quality is being investigated.

It may well be that these incidents would have happened without having had the vaccine.

Cyprus did not report blood clot case following AstraZeneca vaccination
Cyprus authorities have not reported any case of blood clot following vaccinations with the AstraZeneca shot or any other shot, the Ministry of Health said on Thursday, after such reports in Austria.
The Ministry points out that not such incident was reported from people vaccinated with the particular batch of AZ, or any batch of AZ or any other shot in Cyprus and that the drug safety department of the Ministry closely monitors the issue and will make announcements if needed.
The Ministry also points out that following the cases in Austria, the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee of the European Medicines Agency has said that the blood clot reports are not related to the vaccination.

Health Ministry provides additional information on withdrawn Astrazeneca batch
Unsurprisingly enough, news that a controversial batch of Astrazeneca vaccines was also received in Cyprus have stirred fear among people who got injected with the specific jab.
But the Health Ministry on Friday reassured that all is under control and went a step forward disclosing additional information on this issue, according to Philenews.
“A small amount of vaccines from this batch was received in Cyprus, indeed, and some doses were administered through the island’s vaccination program last month,” a source said.
“Officially, the relevant committee monitoring pharmaceuticals had not been informed of any complications. However, because of reports made by Austrian authorities, the Ministry of Health had timely suspended vaccination with the specific jab until official explanation was provided by the European Medicines Agency,” added the same source.

Re: Cyprus among countries with controversial AstraZeneca vaccine batch
What a pity that the vaccine is on hold after one death and one pulmonary embolism.
I know the terrible suffering of people who have succumbed to Covid 19, my friend was gasping for breath, even when ventilated, terrified when the hospital staff tried to pass a feeding tube, in the end the life support system was turned off.
Let's hope the authorities will start to use this vaccine again soon.

Wonder why you are so keen on the AstroZennica vaccine, Firefly? From what I have heard and my own experience having had this jab, is that in some people there is a reaction. Flu like symptoms, muscle aches, headaches, nausea. According to my doctor, some of her patients are taking up to 3 weeks to stop having them.
So if a few people are having really severe problems with embolisms, it seems reasonable for a Govt to wait until tests being done on the particulat batch of the vaccine which has maybe caused this, are completed. Apparently people in 17 EU countries were sent it.
Interestingly, the Pfizer vaccine doesn't seem to cause a bad reaction, just a sore arm!

Re: Cyprus among countries with controversial AstraZeneca vaccine batch
We both had the AZ first vaccination on Thursday, and Friday was a miserable day for both of us with flu like symptoms, which this morning had just about gone. Personally I was and still would be perfectly happy to take the risk, if in reality there is any risk from the AZ vaccine.
Re: Cyprus among countries with controversial AstraZeneca vaccine batch
I had the Astra Zeneca jab on Thursday. Yesterday I felt tired with a slight headache.
Today I’m back to normal.

It mattered not to me which vaccine I had, just as long as I didn't die in the same circumstances as my friend. I would willing put up with feeling ill for one day, rather than suffer the terrible death that Covid 19 brings.
Up to you of course, but it's not rocket science to me.

The Vaccine slip which includes your 2nd appointment, includes the AZN batch number.
Re: Cyprus among countries with controversial AstraZeneca vaccine batch
Exactly. No point in worrying - the common side effects of all the vaccines are well publicised, you know your own body and if anything untoward happens then that is the time to seek medical advice.Happy in Cyprus wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 12:04 am Yup, I checked, and mine was from that batch. Until I hear something I should be worried about, I remain unconcerned.
