Blind People

Post by Mandyr »

Just out of interest has anybody seen a blind person with a white stick or with a trained dog for the blind over here? Is there an institute for the blind on the Island?

We lived there for nearly ten years, and have never seen anyone with a white stick or guide dog.

That said, sadly, the way people drive in Cyprus, I would be very worried for the blind person and the dog.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

Not just for blind; you see very few people with any form of visible handicap. In the minds of, probably the less educated Cypriots, there is still a stigma attached to any form of disability. Fortunately, this problem is slowly being eroded.

Believe it or not, many people who should have a blue badge do not, because it is an admission of weakness. (Of course, there are many who do have a blue badge when they should not!)

I believe that assistance dogs for disabled people were tried in Cyprus, a few years ago, but unfortunately it was mistreated. These dogs are supposed to live in the house, but this poor dog was kept outside, tied to a washing line and generally abused. The charitable concern who was hoping to use trained assistance dogs to help people with special needs, had to remove the dog. Very sad.

No, unlike you, I don't keep a record chapter and verse! I think that brief mention was made in the paper. But I heard it by word of mouth from someone who helped in one of the rescue dog charity centres.
I also had dogs of my own then, so was well up in what was going on in the field of animal welfare.

Well then if you can't supply any link, and you got it from the mouth of someone, and you think ,there was a "brief" mention in a paper, then excuse me, if I ask for some more info
