This appears to be saying that you can drive on a UK driving licence in the EU and no need for an International driving permit.
Can I still drive in Europe?

Yes. The UK Mission to the EU said last night that those with a driving licence issued in the UK would not need to use an International Drivers Permit in the EU, as had previously been thought likely.

Anyone any thoughts on this?

Probably for the same reason that they only work for cash, don’t have their names on any utility bills, can’t or won’t get the required residency documents in order.

I waited until I was 70 before I changed my UK licence to a Cypriot one.. I suppose one reason was why change something that is perfectly valid.. Why go through all the queueing at the Transport department when I didn't have to..
I was certainly not 'working under the radar' or doing 'jobs for cash'.. It was simply a job that did not have to be done at that time ..

Im sure the insurance companys will find something in the small details, re having a valid driving licence of the country you recide in, if God forbid anyone has a serious accident and large claims were lodged,

Well the Insurance company certainly will know that their insured drivers have a UK licence. You have to provide it when you take out the insurance.. I have had a few accidents here in Cyprus one a write off. No problem with insurance or police with a UK licence.. I have a Cypriot one now by the way..

E. g. because the licenses other countries don´t need to be renewed once you reach an age limit. Or because it may be more convenient to get an international license in your home country without having to queue at the road transport department.

The British High Commission, strongly recommends UK citizens living in Cyprus to change their UK driving licences to Cypriot ones, from the Horses mouth

When I changed mine to the Cypriot paper licence the man at the MOT read out the address for confirmation and it was a Polis address. When I pointed out that I didn't live in Polis he told me not to worry itll be fine and I used that licence till I changed it to the credit card type several years later.

I don't really understand why some people who live here are so reluctant to change their UK driving licences to Cypriot ones. I changed mine shortly after we came to live here 20 yrs ago. More recently changing the tatty old paper one with a stapled on ID photo, for the smart new credit card sized plastic one.The Cypriot licence is valid abroad and I have hired cars in the UK with no problem.
If you make a photocopy of your UK license and keep it safe, you can always prove that you have a UK license.

I didn't change mine because it wasn't necessary to do so.

Exactly for the same reason why I still had my green UK paper licence when we returned to UK in 2016. It wasn't obligatory to change it. I never changed my physical address in UK up to leaving in 2004 so I had no need to update it.

When I returned to UK, then it became necessary to update the address on my UK licence and now I finally have the credit card plastic one.

Hi Photo Lady your posts are always interesting, but with respect to Cyprus conditions as of now, the times are a-changing! Residents are now being encouraged to change their driving licences.All this because the UK has chosen to leave the EU... so the conditions that you are recounting are now pretty much over.

There is no USA drivers Licence HIC ! Each state has it’s own licence just like the EU . Some will exchange a UK licence without a test most will require you to take a new test , some just the theory test and others a full test including driving. The Ohio test I took with an instructor was a real workout . Maryland however was on a purpose built track. The instructor asked how we did it in the UK and I said on the road and the guy was horrified. I wouldn’t go anywhere near a road with some of the drivers we get in here he said. California was just the theory . Never mind switching your UK licence each time I moved State I had to get a new licence .
