The Paphos Traffic Police proceeded yesterday with an operation aiming to combat traffic violations.According to the Police, between 07:00 and 18:30 members of the Traffic Police carried out a campaign in several areas, checked 180 vehicles and found 74 offences....

HIC, you seem to be a tad anti British these days!
To me it seems a bit unfair to compare the UK's need for greater survellience measures with Cyprus's more easy going nature.. Cyprus is a small island, with a comparatively small population, which though it does have its own security problems,it doesn't have to cope with the level of crime, including terrorism like the UK.
I don'tmind the surveillance cameras in the urban streets of many UK towns. In a country where some people when asked, object to having an ID card, it can be difficult for the police to get the name of a suspect. In my opinion, if you are a law abiding person there is nothing to fear. The British police are among the best in the world, who have to do a difficult and often dangerous job. They must be one of a few police forces who are still mainly un armed.
I like the more easy going attitude in many ways here in Paphos, but not when it concerns potentially dangerous driving habits.

Well said Dee. UK police have more to deal with than Cyprus police.
Just wish they would catch some more boy races etc here in Cyprus and take their liecence away from them.

If the local bobbies were really intent on battling traffic violations they just have to set up at anyone of the following areas and see a multitude of traffic offences on a daily basis.

Went to Nicosia this morning , torrential rain right through Limmasol but I thought after more than fifty years of driving I'd seen everything on the road but I passed a man reading a large hardback book resting inthe steering wheel: couldn't believe it.

There are turn right arrows on the lights that light up first then go out to a red light, and the number of drivers that drive through the red light to turn right is amazing three or four cars at a time do this.
So much so that we came close to a head on crash at these lights as the other driver was looking at his mobile phone when turning right across our path.
And yes I got it on dash cam!

What I cannot understand is why oh why do they announce that they are having a purge for traffic violations when if they want the public to toe the line and drive safely, they should be enforcing the law every day rather than allowing people to be careful, watch what they are doing for a few days and then back to the old habits until another purge is announced ad nauseam
Technology nowadays is a lot bigger detterent and amortised over several years costs a lot less than boots on the ground and its 24/7 enforceable from the get go
If they put cameras on every traffic light I reckon they would catch at least 2 or 3 drivers with telephones glued to their ears during every red light cycle
