Extra charge for using a credit card

Post by galexinda »

I thought this had been banned and so was surprised today to see an item would cost €10 extra if paid for by credit card.

To the best of my knowledge that is unlawful :-( Although maybe I am thinking of Debit Cards

EDIT>> I have now read up about this and traders ARE allowed to charge extra if a Credit card is used, because the trader has extra charges..

Thank you for looking into this Trev - not prepared to pay extra just for using a credit card so it will be a cash transaction.

Just remembered - our insurance company also charges extra for the house insurance premium if a credit card is used.

It is against EU law to charge extra for using a credit card, you can not charge a different total price between cash, debit card, credit card or bank transfer.
You can refuse to accept any form of payment but must do so for all customers.

I am against this law as all law abiding companys have had to raise the prices on all goods expecting the purchaser to use a credit card. Unfair on the customer who uses a debit card.

I have just read the information again - properly this time! I have altered the amount specified though:

Cash = €230
Visa = €240

So, if I use a Mastercard, I would have to be charged the cash price!

Can someone furnish me with the details that you are quoting on this, in the UK we are informed it is EU law that states no charge can be made or deducted based on the payment method, it is now a criminal offence to offer to discount for cash or charge for a card payment. If you check now most companies just charge a booking fee no matter how you pay so we all pay for a card even if its cash.
You can set min & max levels i.e. no more than £1000 cash, min card payment £5.

My Wife purchased some coffees yesterday at Coffee Island and used a Hellenic Debit Card. When checking the receipt, she had been charged an additional €1 for using the card.

Would just mention that in Cyprus there is not much distinction between a credit and debit card - both being charged as a percentage of the transaction cost. Unlike the UK where the retailer is only charged around 10p for a debit card transaction.

Cyprus were issuing a decree that all retailers and others (doctors,lawyers, hairdressers etc.) must have card readers to take payments. This was in the process before Covid-19. Retailers will not therefore be able to refuse this sort of payment. These were the details announced in March but I’m not sure if this has yet passed through as law. https://in-cyprus.philenews.com/doctor ... ts-by-law/
