I would think the building was being renovated before some crisis stopped it in it's tracks. The temporary roof is hardly likely to have been put in place without good cause and the fact that the walls had been stripped of plaster and no evidence of the rubble means not looters. Surely folk in The Troodos would know what's gone on over the years?

What's sad is the amount of graffiti, not becoming of what was once a superb luxury hotel.
Lots of myths and stories surround its demise. Now, it would cost a fortune to restore the building including the roof and then install modern plumbing and electrics, heating, plus a really tasteful and luxurious interior in keeping. Having done all that would enough well heeled guests want to stay there, to pay for and show any profit? Several times grand schemes were hatched, but in the end they fell through.
