Jet Wash Ltd, 96 207155 they clearEd our issue when another company couldn’t.

Even though the other company claimed to have a cameras to locate the issue they refused to use them. They recommended I throw acid down the drain and when I complained about the level of service from them they denied everything...

Best tip if you are still on Septic tanks is not to throw paper down the hole, it will eventually cause problems.

Cesspits need to be emptied regularly. The time between empties depends on the size of the property, number of occupants and the size of the tank itself – it may need to be emptied monthly, quarterly or annually, or any point in between.

In contrast, septic tanks use a simple treatment process which allows the treated wastewater to drain away to a soakaway or stream. A soakaway is a hole dug in the ground and filled with rubble and coarse stones, designed to disperse water back into the surrounding ground without flooding.

Usually on Cyprus.
A septic tank has two chambers and is buried underground in the same way as a cesspit. As wastewater enters the first tank, solids settle at the bottom and begin to decompose, while liquid flows through to the second chamber. This allows any smaller suspended solids to settle and the water to exit the tank through the soakaway.

Likewise no problem for us with toilet paper going into the septic tank, been doing that since 2003.
We did once call out a honey wagon to pump the tank, that was around 2007 when grandkids wanted to see what happened when they flushed a bag of 12 toilet rolls down the loo.
They owned up once the system and downpipes were pumped out!

Lloyd Morning, obviously you have a superior up bringing and working life to many of us, the simple facts are putting toilet paper down the toilet is not recommended if you have a Septic tank toilet system, most of us know this, go into most public hang out and bins are provided, as I said before and I will say it again Lloyd no matter how many times we have discussed this, ask any builder who builds these systems in and they will tell you the same, best to avoid putting toilet paper down the toilet, this really is no problem to use a plastic bag in a bin,it will not kill you Lloyd, at least for many of us it is not a deeply bad experience, but I was bought up in it seems at a lower life style than you. And please remember this is a newish forum, many new members who live here may not know about this...

Brom, it will not be a problem now, but one dark night it just maybe it will be, be sensible and avoid this bad experience.

It is of course your choice to do this, I am really not interested in who throws paper down the bog..you can only advise.

PS I have lived in this particular home for 16 years, never needed our system pumped out, but a couple of neighbors have had to have this done, costs about €100 the last time I heard. Also be very careful throwing down and bleach type corrosives into you Septic tanks, it is very harmful to the Bacteria that removes solids form the tanks.

Now Lloyd know any good removal companies

We are doing a renovation. Do not want cans of soiled paper scattered all over and so asked what could be done, given complete renovation. Were told that problems in old houses are caused by manholes lined with concrete (allowing loo paper to catch), and we should replace them with plastic. They said that would solve the problem.

Do others agree? Our soil pipes are diameter 100mm. We have existing septic tank (to be upgraded if necessary) and absorption pit. Appreciate all advice!

On another matter, we know that biodegradable loo paper is common in North America. Can you buy it in Cyprus?

I should have mentioned that the biodegradable loo paper in North America disintegrates when it touches water.

Sunspot almost has it right.

The problem is caused by having square manholes and small pipes. Make sure that your waste pipes are 100mm diameter. Get a builder to put "benching" which forms a channel to direct the flow. This can be plastic, which are usually preformed, or concrete with a clay tile base.

There is NO problem with having modern toilet paper in a septic tank, it degrades along with everything else that goes in. Note that all the "fatbergs" you see in the news are not caused by toilet paper but by wet wipes.

We have a modern 4" plastic pipe system with plastic manholes. We have no qualms about flushing the toilet paper down to the Septic tank.
But I must add that I would not do in in older Cypriot property

I used to live in Kamares, but we had our house built for us by Leptos and were on site to supervise the build. When our waste water system was built we asked for the larger pipes, not the usual narrow 3 inch ones. We also insisted that they put a slight 'fall on the pipes to the septic tank which is very important as it Improves drainage and helps to prevent blockages. With an old system perhaps you may need to replace the pipes, but if you have a good builder listen to their advice. We lived in our house for 19 years, only had the 'solids' removed once in that time, and always used to flush using good quality toilet paper sparingly and never had any problems.Like you I hate toilet bins! Very primitive in this day and age!

Your home Lloyd like Dee's is probably not 20 years old, many of us do own older properties, it is then the case only to put human waste never paper, it is your choice of course but this is a warning to the older property owners, as I have already said Lloyd, we will continue to use bins and find nothing wrong with doing so, we have never needed a company to clear our system, it works as it should.
