Police efforts to reduce road deaths will see clampdown on speeding in cities

Post by Paphos Life »

Part of police efforts to reduce road deaths will mean less tolerance for drivers within cities who exceed the speed limit.Currently, drivers who are 20 per cent above the speed limit are given a pass but under a new proposal this could be reduced to 10 per cent above the limit....

 How ludicrous! So 50kmph does not mean 50 & if you are abiding by the 100kmph on the highways you'll be fined for driving too slow (I made that bit up). So with such a lax attitude, is it any wonder that people speed in a regardless fashion. Can someone tell me what are the 'passes' available if I drive the wrong way on a one-way street, make an illegal 'U turn' or can't be arsed to buy a parking ticket (maybe a 30 minute pardon whilst I finish my coffee?).

From https://www.thecarexpert.co.uk/how-accu ... eedometer/
The law for car speedometers in the UK
The UK law is based on the EU standard, with some minor changes. A speedo must never show less than the actual speed, and must never show more than 110% of actual speed + 6.25mph.

So if your true speed is 40mph, your speedo could legally be reading up to 50.25mph but never less than 40mph. Or to put it another way, if your speedo is reading 50mph, you won’t be doing more than 50mph but it’s possible you might actually only be travelling at 40mph.

To ensure that they comply with the law and make sure that their speedometers are never showing less than true speed under any foreseeable circumstances, car manufacturers will normally deliberately calibrate their speedos to read ‘high’ by a certain amount. As your satnav is not the designated device by which a car’s speed is measured, it does not need to incorporate any fudge factoring.

The fact of the matter is that speed kills and if all complied with the speed laws we all would be safer and less likely to be killed/seriously injured or slightly injured.

There is a minimum speed limit of 65 on motorways here
Tell that to the excavator drivers who are seen frequently blocking the left lane/hard shoulder!
