British Passport validity

Post by kansas »

I was under the impression that post Brexit we can continue to use our British EU passports until they expire, at which point the renewal will be a purely British passport. In the last 24 hours, however, I have heard from 2 separate sources that our existing passports will cease to be valid as of 1 Jan 2021 and will need to be replaced with a purely British passport before that time.

I think if this were true the logistics alone would be a nightmare. Has anyone heard anything along these lines? I do hope it's a hoax or a misunderstanding.

As far as I am aware, the Passport remains until expiry and is replaced with a blue UK one.
Ticking away, the moments that make up a dull day.

The red passports are being "phased out"! Which means they are still valid after Brexit. If you need to renew they are taking longer! You must, after Brexit, have 15 months left on your passport, if you have renewed early and had the extra 9 months, which will not count! Only the 6 months from issue left will count then it must be renewed. Then you will be issued with the new colour. EHIC are also finished after Brexit. Just need to Google, all there! The Gov. UK website doesn't make sense. Headed "living in Cyprus", then proceeds to tell you about visiting Cyprus?, under Passport and Travel. No wonder people are confused!

Some passports are already being issued as Blue, some are also coming back Red.
At the moment it all depends where your passport is issued from.
I had no wish to have a blue passport, so I renewed mine earlier this year and have a nice new red one and it's already had its first trip out. We came out of Spain on the first day of their lockdown.

As I understand it any extensions on renewal dates will be lost 1st January 21and all passports must have a validity of at least six months to gain access into EU States except Southern Ireland.
My passport which has a three month extension up to 12/05/22 will now have to be renewed at least 9 months earlier than the expiry date shown in the passport.
