Paphos restaurant and bar owners to take to the streets

Paphos owners of mainly tourist businesses appear exasperated with the conditions created by the coronavirus pandemic, and are demanding more state support.

Paphos restaurant and bar owners said they were ready to take to the streets to demonstrate against the crippling conditions that emerged as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Main problem areas are high rents, taxation, and the need for additional state support of tourist centres.

Owners of Paphos food and drink spots held a meeting with the relevant local association SIKAP, leading to the decision to stage a large demonstration in Paphos next week, expected to be attended by large numbers of the city’s restaurant and bar owners. Members of the small business union POVEK are also expected to participate.

With businesses affected by the pandemic islandwide, demonstrations are expected to take place in all Cyprus districts in the coming period, an announcement by SIKAP said.

Weve been going out a lot more than normal trying to support some of these places, it doesn't cost a fortune but every cent helps and it's a win win situation.
Our eldest daughter goes back to work today at one of the big hotels, it has been open for just over a week.

It's all very well joking, but let's face it many enterprises here are dependent on the summer tourist trade to keep them afloat through the winter. Unless something changes it looks as if British tour groups won't be coming here this year.
Its also a catch-22 situation for Cyprus Govt. Do they give way to the tour operators and let Brit tourists arrive here with no testing at the airports, if in doing so they expose the population here to a possible 2nd lock down if the virus returns too?

Have every sympathy with the bar and restaurant owners , but a large number seem to think the solution is put the prices up !
Over the last week myself and friends have visited several such places..e.g. Bars: Pint of Keo £3.50..bottle of Corona £4.50..Vodka and tonic 7.85 and yesterday at a golf club a pint of Shandy £7.85..also almost every restaurant we have been to have increased their prices. I has certainly made us consider where to eat and drink , without feeling being ripped off!

People have got to start realising that this effects everybody. If you have to pay a bit more for a pint of beer, so what? The alternative is no bars open.

Can't say I've found that. We were out on Sunday and the prices were the same pre-lockdown at a very popular Indian and Tuesday we visited our local Taverna and got a Chicken Souvla and a bottle of Leon for 12 euro per serving, the Souvla was so big we took half of it home.
I'm sure there are some who've jacked the prices up as you said but I dont think it's across the board.

Thanks Reesy for alerting us to the (big) increas in prices. Usually we would just order a drink 'knowing' what the cost will be. Now we will be looking at the prices more keenly ..

I am not certain is social distancing is an issue , most bars I have been to you could easily seat 10 metres apart..It is not a case of money , but principal..We go out in a large group , who have decided not to frequent the See You bar and pay 4:50 for a bottle of Corona.

This depends on how much disposable income someone has. Last year a place we used to go once per week put their prices for drinks up 15- 20% depending on the drink, the food went up 13-20% portion sizes went down, now certain food items have gone up a further 20%. There is no way that we are going there again.
On a fixed income its just getting too expensive and we can only go the places who aren't as needy, and there are some that haven't budged on prices in years.

We just try to do our bit to help out places we've frequented for years.

Much as we would like to support local businesses, we have also had our income reduced by a considerable amount since April, so our alternative is to go out even less, which is the case for many people especially those who are working who have had to cut back due to a lower or in some cases no income. Certainly people in our complex are not going out anywhere nearly as often as this time last year and most evenings all the residents are at home.

I had an excellent mini meze at St Nicholas Taverna at Anogyra today with friends. The food was was above the average and we all had plenty to eat!
The price of this feast Was a modest €13. Drinks were also fairly priced.
It is a delightful taverna in a very attractive old village for any one who hadn't been there before. It was also exceptionally clean too.
