Amazon.co.uk : Super Service!

Post by geoffreys »

I needed a new electric shaver and as Santa did not bring me one I ordered one from Amazon at 4.00 pm on New Years Day.
It was delivered today by UPS at 2.00 pm.
That is 3 days and over a holiday period - brill.
So why, with all the modern technology etc can't the regular mail service be quicker than it is?
Incidentally by 2.30 pm today the Amazon website had been updated "delivered 4th Jan to Mr Smith".

On the 22nd December I ordered a wireless keyboard from them.

On the 2nd of January they cancelled the order because it had a battery in it...

I have ordered lots from Amazon for delivery in Cyprus. It has always taken weeks to arrive via the Post Office. Do you have Amazon Prime? Is that why it was delivered by courier?

They seem to do it randomly... I ordered a sound bar for my TV that arrived the next day via UPS without being a Prime member or requesting express shipment....

Perhaps if they have a UPS shipment coming and you happen to order at the right time they consolidate it...?

Maybe it depends on the value of the item being shipped. I haven't ordered anything above £35 in value, but items take weeks or months to get to me, and always via Cyprus Post. For example, I ordered a pair of crocs during the first week of September. The estimated delivery date was 28 Sep which came and went so I reported to Amazon that I had not received them. They immediately responded, refunded the postage costs and asked me to wait until mid Oct for delivery before contacting them again. Mid Oct came and went and I told them that I had not received my crocs. They again responded immediately and told me that they had despatched a replacement. In mid Nov, I had a package delivered to the Post Office for collection, which had to be signed for - it was the replacement crocs. I was rather shocked when 2 weeks later, I had another package to be collected, though not to be signed for. It was the original shipment.

I don't mind paying a small courier charge to get my orders quickly, but I can't see any option on the Amazon checkout to request (and pay for) courier delivery.

I've ordered loads of stuff from Amazon. Some got lost in Germany, some arrived weeks early, some arrived late, and some never arrived.

The ones that arrive late turn up in damaged packaging. The damaged packaging labels attached were all from Royal Mail, so the problem was in the UK.

But batteries are a big no no.

No. I do not have Amazon Prime. The item was sent by their "standard delivery", total of £50 of which £10 was p&p.
I have ordered stuff from Amazon for delivery to Cyprus for 11 years now, never had a problem although usually takes about
a week to be delivered. I was just surprised this time as it was so quick over a holiday period. I always make sure our phone number is on the package - by including it in the address section of "check out", whether delivered here by courier or by the mail service this seems to avoid some problems I am sorry to read other forum members seem to have experienced.

Is that ALL batteries? I thought just the lithium ones were apt to catch fire in the hold of aircraft? I ordered a pack of AAA batteries last November which arrived no problem together with rechargeables. Within the last six months, I've also ordered and received a battery for my 'phone and one for my digital camera (all a lot cheaper than buying in Cyprus).

I ordered a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse back in September, again no problem with delivery. X

It is hit and miss I'm afraid...

The frustrating thing is that they don't tell you immediately that there is a problem - the account just says they are waiting for a delivery time.

I ordered a camera from them last year - a week later the order was cancelled.

I re-ordered from a German supplier on ebay who shipped immediately but it was turned back to them at the airport by DHL. I got them to re-ship the camera without the battery.

I then ordered two more batteries from ebay which were shipped and arrived promptly.

Theoretically yes, it should be Li-ion batteries above a certain size that are restricted but they aren't either. I have some 5,000mAh batteries here that were ordered on line and shipped to Cyprus with no problems...

Unfortunately I haven't been so lucky. It is a restriction imposed (on us at least) by Amazon rather than RM though.
