Road network to reopen in Paphos old town

The upgraded road network in the heart of Paphos old town along with two car parks will be open to traffic on Thursday, following a total renovation of the entire area.

Fellachoglou Street, adjacent roads, as well as the newly reconstructed parking spaces with a total capacity of 170 spaces, will be fully operational on Thursday June 11, the municipality announced.

The mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos will officially ‘open’ the area.

The municipality is installing modern road lighting, and the necessary horizontal and vertical road markings are in place.

“This will ensure that the project is fully integrated and given to traffic tomorrow. It will provide easy access and movement, thus contributing substantially to the stimulation of commercial traffic in the traditional shopping centre of Paphos,” a municipality spokesman said.

The entire area, the road and facades along with the two existing car parks are being redeveloped.

On completion, the project will have a total expenditure of 1.3 million euros and was long overdue, as the area had been left to run down and deteriorate for many decades.

“The idea is to present a tidy and attractive centre for our town which will help to attract visitors, shoppers, families, locals and holidaymakers to the old town. It will also join the commercial shopping centre with Mouttalos,” the spokesman said.

Since 1880, the central Paphos street has been the commercial centre of the town where a bazaar was held mainly on Saturdays, according to the municipality. Found close to the market in Paphos old town, Mouttalos was until recently neglected, its infrastructure left largely untouched for decades.

However, more recently the central square was renovated, the narrow roads upgraded and a botanical garden created.

The project also saw the accumulated illegalities in the area removed, as for years the facades of old and abandoned buildings were illegally embellished.

As part of a general ‘tidying up’ of Paphos, the mayor, Phedonas Phedonos vowed to remove all illegal structures, billboards and hoardings in the area, and the wider town.

I spoke too soon, as up to lunchtime the new section of road was still blocked by concrete blocks! Has anyone been there this afternoon who can report on whether it had been opened?

I think the one behind the mosque is free. It always used to be.

I hoped to find out on our way back from the Mall, however where we used to turn left jus past the taverna and opposite the entrance to the refurbished car park, now appears to be one way coming from the mosque car park, so not sure of the way in, possibly via the previous left turn that was the diversion route during the works, but ‘we’ weren’t that interested to find out...so I dutifully continued homeward.

I think you are right. There was definitely a sign pointing "car park" last time I took the diversion.

Yes, down a short stretch of narrow one way road the residents of which clearly don’t agree with! 😂

There is certainly some tight carparking on that road.

Anyway, here's a snap of the carpark I took yesterday.

Very nice but will park on the lower car park by the Hammam. Been hit too many times in these tight car parks.

It would have been nice if there was enough money in the budget of the town to cover the car park, or at least part of it, that tourists, when they come back from shopping, find a less hot car.

Even better would be if the roofs were covered with solar modules to produce electricity for future charging points for e-cars as I think Paphos aim is to become a "smart city", but when....

Very good idea Max, but probably the budget didn't run to it! Plus the fact that due to various delays the whole upgrading programme took much longer than was planned and probably that put the original costs up!
Also that's not the way Paphos authority works, if they ever put in electric car charging points, no doubt the new road surface would need to be dug up yet again to allow cables to be laid.....,!!

There is no necessity to dig up the new road surface, even when you have no doubts. The electricity for charging the cars can come from the solar modules above and back-up batteries. How do you know how Paphos Authorities work, by the way :?:

As Dee says there doesn't appear to be any organisation when it comes to road works and Utilities. I remember when the road through Konia to Armou was resurfaced, within two weeks there were five excavations to install Utilities like water and drains. So don't be surprised if some contractor starts digging up the roads around the car parks in the next few weeks.

The road works Konia-Armou were before 2012 and happened because the old Mayor's corruption involvement. It was one of the reasons he went to jail.
As I lived there, in the middle of the road works, I could see through my apartment window what happened in the evenings, when materials were moved away in a big way....
I believe since our new Mayor is responsible, things improved a lot also with the help of Deputy Christos Makariou and other competent employees in his team.
