Concerns over crowding in Paphos castle area

Post by memory man »

For the first time since the implementation of movement restrictions in mid-May, the scenes in the Paphos coastal area yesterday afternoon resembled the pre-Coronavirus era.

Hundreds of citizens, taking advantage of the relaxation measures, the low number of cases in recent days and the sunny weather, took to the Kato Paphos coastline causing what scientists and government officials are anxiously trying to avoid.

All areas were crowded with citizens, from the Lighthouse walkway to the harbour and from there to the eastern walkway that leads to the Yeroskipou Municipality, and naturally, no distances were maintained due to the high concentration of people.

This incident, albeit it was observed for the first time yesterday in Paphos, raised concerns among the authorities who call on the public to refrain from repeating it, as it may result in unpleasant setbacks.

One of the reasons I have not gone on my previously daily walks down at the coast. Impossible to keep a safe distance on a crowded, narrow path. I'm still doing my 10,000 steps plus a day around the house and locally. I saw one illustration at the beginning of the crisis which recommended even greater distances when exercercising, particularly running and cycling. Our daughter in the UK will not overtake anyone on her bike unless she can ride on the other side of the road.

Well I was one of the ‘crowd’ yesterday afternoon. Yes there were quite a few people about but almost all were obeying social distancing measures - keeping distances/moving to the side (apart from a few canoodling couples on the lighthouse walk covered benches!). I found it was quite civilised and pleasant. For any that might question the choice to go - I can only walk on the flat and live on a pretty steep hill so this was my first real bit of exercise for quite some time. We did notice a golf buggy up on the hill near the lighthouse which appeared to have a couple of ‘uniforms’ in it watching the walkers. I think they would have intervened if they thought the laws were being broken.
