Environment Commissioner slams killing of snakes

Post by Devil »

And she posed four questions, as she queried the value of such articles:

I assume the “monster” viper threatened the tractor?
Someone who understands please tell me. Does the shadow of the snake reflect its real size, or could it be adapted in photoshop?
Even if there were force majeure reasons, why publicise such as photo? Does it serve any purpose other than self-promotion?
Aren’t people out collecting capers already aware of the dangers? Do they need to see the photograph to be persuaded?

At least she seems to have a sense of humour!

Just seen a picture of the snake and the tractor driver. Would not like to meet the snake at anytime.

They are unpleasant snakes, I had a close encounter with one when out walking the dog. Luckily he came back immediately when I called him, otherwise the snake would have had him. The pose of the snake in the photo is typical, head up and they emit a loud hissing sound. They don’t run away like most other snakes. I wouldn't kill any snake, but most country living Cypriot farmers and villages will...

Not all snakes most farmers I have spoken with, welcome the black whip snakes on their land, as they are harmless ,and help keep rodents down

If you’re face to face with a BNV, whl, can I suggest you get off your knees and run the other way? 😆

I have faced this already, I was in my garden, doing some digging, when in front of my eyes, there was a BNV, I didn't know what type of snake it was at the time, but it just raised it self up facing me, so without thinking I just slamed the shovel at it, the shovel took its head cleanly off, as the wall was right behind the snakes head, and here's the thing as I raised the snakes head on the shovel to take a closer look.,,,,, the snakes head hissed at me  I kid you not, thus resulting in me dropping the shovel. And going inside to change my underwear and have a large brandy to settle my shaking hands.

As I said earlier BNV’s are scary if you happen to meet one unexpectedly! Another point is that they seem to be able to adapt their body colouring to blend more closely with their surroundings. They can inflict a lot of damage to a dog if they happen to bite one. So keep dogs out of long grass and from sniffing around the base of bushes which helps to lessen the possibility of them disturbing a sleeping BNV! All vets can sell you a combined anti snake and poison kit, if asked. Always take it with you on walks with the dog in open soaces. This provides immediate first aid, but you will need to get the dog to a vet asap.

And yes I know that the other snakes are harmless to man and the large black one is both harmless and is useful as its prey number small rodents etc!

I’ve had a couple of run ins with large BNVs when I’ve been out exploring one particular valley in the Akamas. Both times I wouldn’t dream about hurting the snake, as it is their patch. Turn up in my back garden though, and the gloves are off.

Yes, all animals have a role, predator prey and all that, but that includes humans. If a BNV bit my daughter in my back garden because I wanted to see things from its point of view I wouldn’t feel good about it.
