Sunday shop opening back on May 10

Post by mike strand2 »

The Cyprus association of retail trade enterprises announced on Saturday that all shops allowed to operate during the pandemic will re-open on Sundays starting May 10.

Shops such as bakeries, supermarkets, butcheries and fish markets have remained closed on Sundays since March 31, after a previous decree issued by the health minister.

The minister’s decision, implemented to reduce citizens’ movements during the pandemic, was criticised since more people were crowding in those places during the rest of the week, risking the lack of proper social distancing and being infected with the virus.

My view is to keep them closed on a Sunday, not for any religious reason, but as we have seen during the lockdown, air quality has improved, so lets not increase it again on Sundays, with cars going to & fro to the shops. During the week the shops open until late, which should be ample for 99.9% of the populous.

But quite a lot of people are restarting work this Monday. So this Sunday opening is helpful to them.By opening every day it also means less foot fall visiting a supermarket at most times.
Anyway, probably most of the small shops who closed on a Sunday before, will provably do the same now.

Maybe there could be a compromise solution like allowing bakeries to open on Sunday morning. Some people might prefer freshly baked bread / rolls to stale ones.

Usually bakeries are open on Sundays. But it isn’t only bread that people need!

What would be that urgent that you couldn’t get it the previous or following week?

I agree with Mike. Without the extra tourists I don’t see the need for 7 day trading. I think the staff all deserve a little extra time to themselves .

Oh well, when you are in Rome do as the locals do... I don’t think that Sunday opening is for us, but for the convenience of those who are working during the week. The supermarkets employ extra people to do this. People in the big supermarkets are working shifts. Therefore providing more job opportunities.....

The Sunday Times for a start!! I so desperately miss not buying that; I've been going through withdrawal symtoms. And no, I don't want the online version thanks!
I'm guessing Lloyd, that you will eventually have to get used to reading it on line. Newspapers are such a waste of natural resources; the wood pulp needed, the electricity to drive the presses and the transport to deliver (& you picking it up)!

Some years ago when Sunday opening first started I asked a till lady if she liked working Sundays, she said she was glad of the extra money.
Maybe at the time it was just overtime, if that's the case now I don't know

I for one wouldn't care. one way or the other if shops open on a Sunday, most shops stay open late every day. So there's no excuse, for anyone to run out of anything, especially retired people

I also think that the people complaining aught to think back to how they coped 30 years ago prior to Sunday opening.

For me, it was one of the thinks that destroyed family life in the UK as Sundays were normally the day where the families all got together for lunch etc. However, life evolves and goes on regardless!

If Alfa Mega, Paps and the like, import products to my taste, then I will buy. If they are not available I would have to look at an alternative. I don't need to shop for them on a Sunday. As I said, (maybe in part, as a result from the pandemic) times they are a changing and we will all be affected one way or another.

Happy in Cyprus wrote: Wed May 06, 2020 2:52 amThe day I buy it makes not a jot of difference...indeed, it would be pointless buying it any other day of the week
To be fair Lloyd, the news paper is no longer somewhere we go for news as almost all of it is all over the internet and published in the online version as it happens. So the day you buy it, it isn’t really breaking news as it used to be and the rest of the paper is just features. ;)

A good friend of mine used to religiously buy the Sunday Times and always said that it isn’t possible to read it all on Sunday but it keeps him occupied during the week too.

This debate has moved on from my original post to being Environmental. Whilst I'm sure we all care about the environment in one way or another, there's really no ideal that will satisfy us all. To my mind, the world does need to change in lots of different ways. Of course it will and has done already, but we have a long way to go for our grandchildren & their grandchildren! Some things are in our own hands, others not! The point I was putting to Lloyd & others was that 'times they are a changing'. We all need to stop & think how we can achieve the same end without impacting on the environment (me included). Do we all do enough?

Here endeth my sermon for today  :)
