I really wouldn't believe anything I read in the Cyprus Mail comments section.

Because loads of nutjobs post there. Just to clarify, as others have done, I am talking about the comments section, not the paper itself.

I read the comments. The first one was xenophobic blaming the UK and US for spreading the virus. Also said (this Island) isn’t just for pensioners... not really relevant to that particular article. It seems that the native are restless about the curfew restricting their freedom, perhaps.

Not at all. As I said, most of the comments are left by nutjobs. If you assume that comments left by "natives" are indicitive of what the local Cypriot population think, then you have to assume that the comments left by UK migrants are also indicitive (of us).

Well, they aren't. Most of them are written by idiots with axes to grind.

Don't get me wrong. Not EVERY post is written by a gibbering moron, but most of them are.

I've never understood why CM allow such comments to be published. They should put someone in charge of the section for just a few day's editing to eliminate all the trash, banning the worst perps and limiting the replies to a comment to, say, three.

My experience on the comments, has been that there are groups of Greek and Turkish Cypriots in England, who are very vociferous and much more extreme than most Cypriots. Then there are the Turks, who take part, with their side of the equation, followed by some other nationalities, mainly Brits... Generally at least half of the comments seem to descend into political nut job areas, blaming the other side and with no reasonable argument. Certainly not somewhere you would base your views of life.

Some times there is some after-post moderation. But if I'm not mistaken, posts have to be approved before they appear. So somebody is clearly not doing their job.

Clearly we have different standards on what constitutes acceptable behaviour, and mild amusement.

I have to say, some of the comments on the CM site leave me open mouthed with astonishment.
