Actually, I believe that the bats that are eaten are not the small insectivorous ones but flying foxes which are fructivores. I remember seeing them for sale in Kuching.

Ask the traditional Chinese to eat cheese, butter or any other milk product and you will get the same reaction from them as we may have from the thought of bats or rats or mice.

Asians often can´t digest lactose and therefore get digestion problems from dairy products. That explains why they aren´t popular in Asia.
