Actually, I believe that the bats that are eaten are not the small insectivorous ones but flying foxes which are fructivores. I remember seeing them for sale in Kuching.

Asians often can´t digest lactose and therefore get digestion problems from dairy products. That explains why they aren´t popular in Asia.
