I suspect that this is going to cost us a pretty penny or two. It has been going on for far too long

Typical of Cyprus, wants the good things, grants for this that and the other but wont adhere to any EU legislation that all other members are adhering to

Same applies to most of the new eastern bloc EU joiners

In a way one of the reasons I voted OUT

How exactly does voting out help improve the situation?

Exactly. Unless you are voting in Cypriot elections ,you opting out of the EU in the UK election is irrelevant.
Unfortunately, Cyprus although they pay lip service to EU regulations, will only enforce them selectively here! The whole sewerage saga is a nightmare for Paphos, as people who were here at the time will remember.

When the majority of Cyprus's waste water is going into septic tanks rather than a sewage system then I fail to see how Cyprus would ever have been able to comply with the regulation.

Anybody any idea of where the 31 'urban areas', referred to in the report, are located.

Just six were named in a report I read .. "In particular, the decision concerns omissions in the collection and processing of urban waste in 31 Cyprus communities, including Aradippou, Ypsonas, Voroklini, Dali, Polis Chrysochous, Xylofagou, and many more. "

In a few years time when we the UK stops paying my tax and VAT contributions to the EU it will stop my anger at the grants that Cyprus and other gets from the EU for such things as the Moutallos Cliffs public area that is never used and being used as a grafitti outlet, perhaps they received the grants under the "public art "budget

I could go on forever, the decorations on the sea front between the Lighthouse Beach and the Harbour, thousands spent on a lampshade, a metal saw, some old window frames and a bit of a candle on some old rope....money for old rope comes to mind

Plans for a 2.4 million euro park just announced today on this site. I wonder how much of this is financed by EU grants for a say a €1m park that will be a derelict unmaintained, unused slum in 7-10 years and the remaining € 1.4 filtered out to those in the know in fakelaki

I could go on and on

If you hate it that much do us all a favour and go back to the UK.

I have a perfect right to express my opinions, which some people cannot accept as I say things as I find them. Sorry if this sticks in your claw

I have paid my Taxes in the UK for 45 years, most of which has been self employed, never claimed a penny in sick pay, unemployment pay, family allowance, nothing whatsoever

I am the son of a Polish immigrant that came to the UK after the war, after being used as slave labour for 5 years who installed a work ethic of "if you dont work, you dont eat " which I have followed since I was 12 years old

I will help anyone out if they will then help themselves, but when I see someone extracting urine I have my opinion

The other day I passed the Chinese Park which was mobbed with mum's and toddlers; the kiddies playing and the mum's chatting.
I lived in old drab Soviet cities that many British appear to hanker for as they condemn any improvement or artwork in the surrounding area.
Like you I paid more than my fair share of taxes but unlike you I do like to see the town improved with art, parks and even the fountains on the roundabouts.
The UK were fined several times for delaying improvements to the water quality of Britain's beaches and now many are blue flagged because of EU legislation so it's not just the Eastern European countries and Cyprus who are reluctant to spend the money.

Mirek raises some good points. There is a tendency on here to criticise anyone who doesn’t necessarily eulogise about any and every ‘improvement’ done in Paphos. People see things in different ways and it should be possible to express ones own views without fear of being ‘told to go back to the UK’. I am happy to see waste ground in Paphos turned into parks, but less so if they become sterile with too much concrete and metal appearing instead of trees, shrubs and some grass! But this raises the question as to whether the Mayor will need to employ more gardening staff to keep all the parks looking good!
It would be a good idea if recycling urban waste water projects were set up, which when treated, be could then be used to water all the trees and parks in Paphos.
Recycling of waste water is done very successfully in other countries, Israel being a very good example of conservation of water.

"Go back to the UK" is an equally valid opinion to have. It's easy to see where the term "whinging pom" came from.

Do you think this happens in Cyprus only? I could tell you quite a few similiar examples of wastefulness from my home country of Germany. Like e. g. bridges with no roads leading to them or motorways ending in a field because plans were changed and funding reallocated. Or a carpet regarded a piece of art for 70000 German Mark (that was real money back then in the eighties) on display in a public library because a certain percentage of the cost of construction had to be spent on art even though there was no money left to pay staff to keep the library open. I´m sure things like that happen in the UK as well and have happened even before the EU was even founded.

Why are there so many people on this forum who think if someone states something they disagree with then that person must be wrong and should "go away", I would think there are many Cypriot born people who agree with Mirek.

We are all entitled to our own opinion.

Without people complaining, criticising etc. people would fall into a catalepsy of self satisfaction and are prepared to accept mediocrity. Sometimes within criticism positive points may be found.
