Abbeygate Insurance in Paphos

Post by Poppy »

We had both our car and our house contents insured with Abbeygate when we lived in Paphos. We went in to cancel both at the end of January. We were told there was no refund due on our car insurance as it was due for renewal April so although not happy we accepted that. Our house insurance was not due for renewal until August so we were entitled to a refund albeit nowhere near what we expected with cancellation fees etc.We were told it would take several weeks to do this and although not happy we had to accept. It is now over 6 weeks and we have still not received the money so I rang this morning and was told it is due to Cyprus laundering rules that you have to wait 6 - 8 weeks - what a load of codswallop!!

Have you left Cyprus (Paphos) now then?

We cancelled out car insurance and got a pittance back - all the monies they took were inline with their terms and conditions.

The money did not arrive as promised and we had to chase it up.

Nice one Poppy, not to far from our hometown of Scarborough.
The reason I asked was I wondered why you didn't take out short term insurance if you knew you were leaving and
had a date in advance.
Anyway I would have thought you should get a pro-rate refund on any "whole" calendar months.
Will depend on the "small print" though.
Cheers,
Geoff.

The problem with cancelling car insurance you're relying on them
giving you a note confirming your no claims bonus and no doubt they could be bloody minded about it

No to be fair they were fine about the No Claims proof and gave me the letter in the office but have realised just how expensive contents insurance was in Cyprus compared to here. I can get pretty good cover here with various companies for between £60 - 80 whereas I was paying more than double that in Cyprus - strange as my car insurance here is dearer.
