Scottish independence: Nicola Sturgeon to seek second referendum - bbc

Scottish independence: Nicola Sturgeon to seek second referendum
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-sco ... s-39255181

...The Scottish first minister said the move was needed to protect Scottish interests in the wake of the UK voting to leave the EU.
She said she would ask the Scottish Parliament next week to request a Section 30 order from Westminster.
The order would be needed to allow a fresh legally-binding referendum on independence to be held....

This could get very interesting.

I wouldn't say that. If she wants Scottish Independence, and she does, and still wants to remain in Europe, then getting out of Britain sooner rather than later would make most sense.

It does seem kind of weird to want independence from the UK but not from Europe though. But then again, I'm not Scottish. If I was, and saw this as a possible means of staying in Europe, I would jump at the chance.

As my good Scots friend recently said to me "she's only in it for what she can get out of it". He tells me that there is a general undercurrent feeling in Scotland that she is a pain in the posterior and will not get the support that she will need to 'make the break'. Time will tell!

She is fairly representing the mandates she was elected under. She happens to be very powerful within Scotland, as the SNP virtally wiped out Lanbour, who needed a lesson.... Unless labour do something right soon, and I don't think they will, then she will wait until Brexit is foregone and then she will suss the mood within the country and the EU. Ulster is an even more complex situation, as it is not feasible to create a border between an Independent UK and the EU in Ireland. As it is, the parties suppporting Remain in Ulster, hold power, in theory and it could become very messy there.

Hudswell wrote: Mon Mar 13, 2017 6:22 pm Sturgeon is using Brexit as a pretence to further her hatred of the English and break up the union. She can demand all she likes, but Scotland will not get the authority to hold another referendum until Brexit is done and dusted, it is of a secondary order. The polls in Scotland are currently showing a wish to remain in the Union albeit the majority is slimmer than it was in the last referendum, you know the "one in a generation" one. And there is no guarantee that the EU would let Scotland join, Spain for one would take a lot of convincing. Again nothing to do with Brexit and everything to do with her personal ambition.
Sorry. Wrong about the polls. They are currently 50-50 and in some, more in favour of independence.

Brexit has annoyed a lot of Scotland and Unionism in massive decline.

50-50 in that one.... the telepgraph one has wavered.... back and forwards.

http://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/ ... ll-updates

The reality is, polling is now pretty useless... look at Trump, Brexit etc.

Sturgeon will push for a 2018 vote and Brexit is expected to increase those looking for independence. I personally think they should wait until Brexit and then decide if a significant percentage is in favour.... as Brexit shows only too clearly, that minimal referendum votes will still split a country.

I think Ulster will become a much more interesting area. The Republic won't support Ulster pushing to join, but the populace could end up split over the issue. While the unionist vote is still marginally stronger, the middle-class unionists have moved away from the DUP and backed SDLP, Alliance and even Sinn Fein..... an intriguing area....

You may well not like the leader or policies but in fairness you can't really compare
the SNP with the BNP - worlds apart.

Quote from my good Scots friend:
"I see no sense in voting to be free of Westminster, where at least they are democratically elected, and at the same time voting to be subjected to the crazy laws, rules, wasteful expense. etc. and be 'governed' by un-elected idiots in Brussels (mainly failed politicians in their own countries)."
This is from someone who originally voted for an independent Scotland!

Nicola Sturgeon wants Scotland to be independent. So why does she want to remain (or become) dependent upon the EU which will legislate 80% of Scottish laws, subjugate the Scottish Parliament to Brussels, impose the Euro on Scotland and place the European court above the Scottish Supreme Court. What's independent about that? Oh yes - independent of Great Britain is what she really means.

However, I suspect that she has misread to mood of the Scottish people as to which union they would rather remain with. I believe in democracy, so although the last Scottish Referendum was meant to be a once in a generation event, I say let there be another Referendum for Scottish independence. If the Scottish people go for it, then fine - that's democracy in action. I personally would prefer the union to stay in place, but it's ultimately up to the Scots - again!

But we can still rise now and be a nation again"

Jeepers Hudswell 😨😨😨

You know not what you talk about as far as the Scottish people are concerned. . . . . . . . . . Seriously.

Of course there are disagreements between friends, families and foes, but for Gawd's sake man. It's not ALL about what ONE woman has to say.

It's about what we ALL (in Scotland) have to say, discuss and ultimately feel, so please give us the credit to make up our own minds up in a thoughtful and caring way.

As A Scot, hopefully I have a say, I am extremely concerned re divisions, in Scotland and elsewhere, now, more than anytime, we all need to stick together. Let's sort out our differences later.

I should add that as a Scottish property owner, who lives in and pays Cyprus Tax, I did not have a vote in the last referendum, and I am sure that will be the case in the next one, if it happens.

Is that fair?

Ermmmm Mark.. . . . . . . As far as I can remember?? When we lived in Paphos (for several years), we were property owners in Scotland, paying tax and Social Insurance in Cyprus and we were still definitely able to vote in Scottish Government affairs. Although we had to register our UK address to do so.

MB

PS. Yep, definitely remember doing so.

Wrong Maggie
I did not have a vote, nor did Scottish Soldiers serving overseas, I do not live in Scotland, and was denied a vote.
If I was a 16 year old non property owner living in Scotland, I could have had a vote.
What do 16 yr olds have that I do not?

Och well Mark. We will have to agree to disagree. I remember posting my vote to the Highland Council in Inverness. X And my vote being verified by email.

Maybe the rules have changed.

PS Mark, we lived in Paphos from 2005 until 2012.
