Dodgy Doctor
Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true? A: The heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... Don't waste it on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up the heart rate will not make you live longer; it's like saying you extend the life...

Re: Idea
Most verbal conversations head off in different directions to that at the start. It's the nature of the beast. Yes, it can be mildly irritating when the topic goes a long way off, but a well-placed comment can always bring it back. I see no reason to start gagging open and free conversation, Devil.

Re: Poison Ayia Marinoudha
Hunting season always brings a spate of this dreadful act, it never stops and the locals may have an answer to why they do this. The current hunting season is WITHOUT dogs - so those whose hunting dogs did not perform adequately during the November & December 2016 season will perhaps have just ...

Re: Deliveries - do they go to your home address?
What address appears on your electricity bill? House name, village post box number, village name and postcode, of course! :D Oh, and for "proof of address" purposes, we don't write the box no as "P O Box No ..." we simply add it as a number after the house name. Otherwise, deali...

Re: Deliveries - do they go to your home address?
A lot also depends on how easy it is to explain to somebody how to find your house. Our road in Polemi seems to have a couple of names, as does our house. You're obviously more in the village itself than we are, in order to have a road name, Dominic. We built on a "dromos agrotiko" (agric...

Oh you poor thing, you. How miserable. No wife to pander to your needs, proffer sympathy and tissues, hot drinks on tap, soothe your aching brow, etc etc. See - we wives ARE useful for more than just spending OH's hard-earned cash on handbags and shoes!   If you've got man flu (as op...

Re: What do you miss?
What I don't miss is: Horrendous traffic jams & roads being totally closed "due to Health & Safety" so the road markings can be renewed (for example). Screaming rats on wings (AKA seagulls) demanding food ever more vociferously, earlier and earlier in the mornings (next door used t...

Re: A Bit Windy
Didn't particularly notice the wind, but did notice a dollop of rain last evening - just as I was letting the cat go out to do what cats do in private before coming back in to sleep on his "comfy bed" for a minimum of 6 hours :D - it's very soporific, you know, just settling down in bed an...

Re: Cost of Forest Fires
In our area, Max, most of the fields that are used for growing wheat have the stubble burnt off at the end of the season - often before the first rains. Fortunately, most farmers also plough a fire break around the edge of the field before burning the stubble. Most of the rural fires are started whe...

Wedding Dresses Stolen in Paphos
http://in-cyprus.com/wedding-shop-swiped-of-all-its-dresses/ Don't panic, it's not Houdinibun's stock gone missing. The shop that was burgled is in Agapinoros (aka Mr Chicken or Russian Road). So if anybody suspicious comes up to you in the pub and offers "Psst, wanna buy a cheap wedding dress,...

Cost of Forest Fires
Over 83% of fires in the rural areas were caused by crop or stubble burning - well, there's a surprise (not!)  http://in-cyprus.com/last-years-fires-to-cost-cyprus-e112m/ The cost is astronomical, most of it down to last year's Solea fire. When will farmers learn not to light fires duri...

Never Assume
His request approved, the CNN News photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport. Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slamm...

Re: OMG no more toast!
I know this specific report is about toast and potatoes in particular, but I think the message to avoid as much burnt food as possible is a sensible one. By the time your sausages or whatever have blackened on the BBQ, there can't be much, if any, health benefits left in them. And the same follows f...

Having been through several civil court cases, both OH and I find the machinations of the law extremely interesting. A lot of cases are won or lost on technicalities (was proper procedure followed), rather than on whether the objected-to decision was correct or not.

Well, "they" do say everything IN MODERATION - and all these scare stories should be taken with a pinch (small!!) of salt. First it was go to work on an egg. Then "Eggwina" Currie claimed they were all bad for you, contaminated with salmonella (or something equally palatable). :r...

Our best hope is with the reunification of the island, which could bring with it access to the mains water supply which is now piped into N.
