Re: Cyprus leaves the crisis behind

I suspect that the reason there are fewer comments on this is not because people eschew good news in some nihilistic bad news death spiral, but are in fact very pleased with Cyprus' good fortune, long may it continue, and lets hope the powers that be are taking the best advantage possible of this go...

Re: Good News for Ex Pat Pensioners!

The EU can only set rules for the healthcare provisions and obligations enjoyed between EU members, the same holds true for residency rights. Each member state is totally free to make whatever healthcare provision it decides to make for non EU nationals Unfortunately for the UKs negotiating position...

Re: Brexit Bill

I fail to see why we should pay anything. Because we are committed to our legal obligations; is that too difficult to grasp? All of our legal obligations, including the treaty of Rome itself and its other iterations are based on payments to gain current or future advantage. If we can no longer gain...

Re: Getting rid of statues.

Martin Luther King was vehemently against the normalisation of homosexual activity in society.

Perhaps the LGBT community should start tearing his statues down, rather than commemorate a bigot?

Re: Trump and THAT demonstration

But the reporting of Trump's response really makes my skin crawl. I don't like the man at all, but the media should criticise him when he screws up.They shouldn't try and manufacture stories to suit their agenda. Otherwise, onlookers will distrust their output, and when they come to report real fou...

Re: The difference between Corbyn and May

Corbyn is a man of principles and one of them is his lifelong pacifism. As such, I consider it would have been very inappropriate for his attending the ceremony commemorating exactly what he is against. You have to admire him for sticking to his principles, rather than take the easy way out and att...

Re: BREXIT negotiations re UK citizens in the EU and EU citizens in the UK

I still fail to understand why we have so many EU rules and regulations regarding trade agreements, when nearly everything we buy is made in China. Can anyone explain please ? Jackie Trade rules are not to facilitate trade, but rather to protect managed [especially socialist style] economies from t...

Re: Britain faces up to Brexit (source: Economist)

I guess then that you haven't yet seen the IMF downgrades for the UK and US economies and upgrade for the EU which were released yesterday? It's surprising just how many of the European economies are now doing rather nicely - even Spain ;) And heaven knows, even Greece is thinking of issuing it's f...

Re: Britain faces up to Brexit (source: Economist)

The big error was waiting so many months before Art 50. If it had been announced immediately after the referendum, both sides would have been unprepared and on an equal footing. As it is, only the UK has no footing while the EU is fully prepared. An even bigger error was the UK not to have been pre...

Re: The Brexit negotiations

There is a backstory to this, which puts the EU position in perspective a little with respect to overall policy which might make the EU 'problem' a little clearer. The original members of the EEC and all of the 'first round' joiners were signatories to the European Convention on Human Rights, which ...

Re: So where is the UK's Brexit masterplan?

So, thinking this is some evil manipulation is just plain silly. Just to be clear I wasn't saying the picture itself was manipulated. I was saying that the EU position of undermining the UK position by using the 'Remain at any cost' contingent to destabilise the UK position internally rather than h...

The UK's negotiation team? EU guys on the left (pic below) look businesslike and are each in possession of discussion documents in folders; UK delegates on the right have nothing in front of them; not even blank paper or a ball-point pen. Body language says it all. Who would you put your mone...

Re: Racism, xenophobia, in Brexit Britain

Your wording is incorrect. Merkel didn´t "renege on a responsibility" - she waived a right, which is not illegal. Do you see the difference? And she took that decision on behalf of Germany only, not on behalf of the whole of the EU. Therefore, she hasn´t exceeded her authority. So your cl...

Re: Britain in 2021

Five years ago, the nasty Tory scum party as a favour to their rich mates reduced corporation tax from 25% to 19%, so the rich could get richer, the poor would be poorer, and the public services would be starved of funding so the capitalist pigs can line their pockets. All in all this has cost the e...

Re: Racism, xenophobia, in Brexit Britain

That´s interesting but doesn´t change the fact that the members of the EU aren´t defenselessly at the mercy of an undemocratic but overwhelmingly powerful monster you´re trying to make the EU look like. Even though the UK doesn´t have a constitutional court (since there is no constitution) surely t...

Re: Racism, xenophobia, in Brexit Britain

Firstly, a government cannot simply rewrite a law which was overridden by a "local" supreme court to achieve what it wanted to achive. Or maybe it could but the court would scrap the new law as well if it´s contents were not in line with the court´s ruling/interpretation of the constituti...
