Paphos Old Town

Post by Keith »

How is it looking there?
When we were over at Christmas it was still very much like loads to do, It did look like there is no way it would be finished anytime soon and with it being a big year for Cyprus wondered how the hell they were going to finish in time.
Loads of delays when in the car, so much so that when going to shops on the Polis road from Peyia we started going via Kathikas.
Enjoyed that drive so much, that will be my new route to Paphos from now on.

If anyone has any up to date photos it would be great to see them please.

Most of the work is scheduled to be finished in time for the official opening ceremony on 28th & when I drove through today they had finished tarmacing the main road. A lot of the pavements are in place & the car parking area is well on!

Mind you, they are working through the night now!

At least Makarios Ave is finished now and pedestrianised, all tiled in grey and white. Trees have been planted along the street and in the plaza. There is a little plaza between the buildings which used to line the main road and the road itself. The road here is very narrow as a central reservation is in place planted with more trees. The new car parks are near to being finished, but pedestrians will have to,pick their way accross the busy road to get to the plaza. Once on Makarios you can walk unhindered up to the market! There are a lot of empty shops visible and the market itself only had a handbag shop open near the street entrance. Things can only get better!

I came along there earlier, but I thought that the digging was on Eladios Ave, rather than on Makarios itself? What I saw was near the garage near the traffic lights -which seemed to have been moved back. The digging had considerably narrowed the usable part of the road which is now narrower than it was before all the work started. There is a constant bottle neck along this stretch of road with long tail backs of traffic in Both directions, especially on weekday mornings.

Sounds like still quite a bit of work to do then.
Can't wait to see the finished article.

I shall be doing a blog article about it during the week. The ten monument one proved popular so I will have a wander about with the camera.

Years later, it is fun looking back and seeing what a mess things were when they were being made.
