Importing a car
Importing a car
Hello, apologies if this has been asked before but I couldn’t find anything although I’m sure the regulations change daily!
We’re aiming to retire here in about 3 years and want to bring our cars out, both ULEZ exempt in London but both over 5.0 litres (I know, madness).
The last time we looked, we worked out it would cost over €40k in import duties (per car!) but looking at it again now, it seems this might not be the case?
Does anyone know definitively what the rules are please?
One vehicle is 2006 and the other is 2009. Many thanks in advance.

This lady is based in larnaca, her job is importing cars, her name is Foda. Tel 97 820657, hear it from the horses mouth
Re: Importing a car
Import duty for cars used to be based on size of engine ie CC, at 5.00 ltrs that would be expensive.
Now its based on Co2 emissions.
If you say that both cars are ULeZ exempt then they must have low emissions, so maybe not that expensive after all.
Could you tell us what your cars are, I'm intrigued.

I am puzzled why you want to know today's rules if you are not importing for 3 years

Re: Importing a car
I was able to import my 7 year old diesel within 12 months of registering in 2021 without import duty by declaring I was moving to cyprus.
don't know if the rules still apply, I was able to ring the import office finally got to speak to a person.

Apologies for the radio silence - I’ve had a busy couple of days and I stupidly forgot to tick the notify me of any replies box!.
Firstly, thank you to everyone for your replies.
Thank you WHL -I’ll give her a call.
Uncle D, one is a Mercedes S600 AMG (which I love) and the other is a supercharged Range Rover Autobiography. I like it but I wish I hadn’t replaced my AMG ML55 with it as that was a mistake!
Thank you J B.
A reasonable question Trevnhil although it didn’t really give me any answers, we’re considering bringing at least one of the cars out now and before we make the move so we don’t have to keep hiring cars for our frequent trips over.
Thank you andytspencer - interesting - I’ll ask Foda when I give her a call.

Re: Importing a car
PS: We’re in Cyprus now Uncle D but I was able to check our MOTs online and the emissions for the Mercedes is 340g/km and the Range Rover is 348g/km.
Re: Importing a car
i think you will find that as a general rule imports from third countries (for example the UK) are only allowed where the age of the car is less than 5 years..
Re: Importing a car
Thanks Mark, I read that the age of the vehicle doesn’t matter if the move to Cyprus is permanent although this will mean that we can’t bring them over until we actually make the move.

Re: Importing a car
Your correct the car import is charge is worked out on the emissions, and you will be paying hefty car tax on them.
