What a nice article in CM today.....

Post by cyprusmax47 »

Many people moan that in the past Cyprus was so much different as you could have left windows and doors open over night or your car in front of the house left open with the car key in the lock all week long without fears of any theft. It is all different nowadays.... NO! not really in my opinion.

Just was reading this nice article in the press (CM) which shows today's reality, and here we are

Just after we moved to Cyprus there was a knock at our front door in Polemi. Two young men were there. They had found my wallet outside the Mesogi Paps bakers, at the top of Paphos. They drove all the way to Polemi to give it back to me, and had to ask around the village to find me.

I was astounded. I said something like "That's amazing, I can't believe it!" At first they thought I meant I didn't believe what they were saying, so I had to explain what I meant.

A good few years ago, I lost my handbag from a boat in the blue lagoon. I didn't know that I had lost it, until I came to get off the boat at Latsi.

I went to the police kiosk on the harbour, and they told me that my bag was at Polis police station, a fisherman had seen my bag, got it out of the sea, and taken it to Polis. My phone had had it, but my purse, with notes and credit/debit cards inside, was all intact. I had his name and the village where he lived, so I ensured that he had a suitable reward.

Just one, of a good few examples, of the honesty of the Cypriot people.

I left my bag on the seatback of a chair (twice) at different places in Limassol - one being on the main road outside the KFC where we'd stopped off for a drink on the way back from our wanderings.

This was in the first few months of arriving as permanent residents in 2004.

I hate carrying a bag so most stuff goes in a jacket pocket (my phone and spectacles) so I just didn't miss it when I got up and walked away on each occasion.

Both times, my bag had been found and handed in to the counter staff - waiting for me to go back and collect it.

Lots of people where I live now, still live as if they are in Cyprus. Many don't lock their doors during the daytime but unfortunately, there have been incidents where people have had people walk into the houses or right up the driveway and into the back gardens as well as nicking stuff from cars.

It's better to not leave things open to temptation - but it's still nice to know there are honest and good people out there in the world.
