Black and White photos around Cyprus

Post by AVO »

I'm posting this here as Dominic suggested it somewhere. Please move it if that's wrong. Also I've followed instructions about file size and pixels, so quality isn't great.

Basically, I love B/W photography and after every trip I normally spend an hour on the plane fiddling with the photo editor to produce B/W versions of my favourite photos.

Wow, you don't realise how striking black and white can be. Wonderful photos.

Thank you. A lot of it is about contrast. Cyprus has wonderful light at all times of year, but in December it’s a bit softer because the sun is lower, so you get better shadow. Endless blue skies can be great, but they’re not amazing for black-and-white photography. A mixture of stonework, sun, blue sky and clouds is perfect, and we do get plenty of that around Christmas.

I read last night that you can actually upload bigger files, so this one is a bit larger. Late afternoon from my top floor balcony at the Aquamare, where I’m lucky enough to spend two weeks every year. The colour version of this is really nice, too.

“Sol Alter” - my favourite Yiota Ioannidou bronze. I even prefer her to Fish Boy, because to me she represents Aphrodite on Aphrodite’s island. New Year’s Day 2022. Last year she was moved right next to the castle and was inaccessible owing to the renovation work. I really hope they move her somewhere accessible now.

You know where this is. Special memory. 27 December 2019. Me, in trademark black hat, taken by a friend who is sadly no longer with us.

Black and white reminds me of old film noir classics like The Third Man.

I like color pics much more than black and white, specially in Winter when everything is green with all the flowers and nice cloud formations.
I think it shows much more what Cyprus can offer. However against-the-lights shots even in August, like this photo can have the effect of B/W with a great contrast.

talking about contrast...

or a rainbow would not look any interesting in B/W
Image

neither would the Agama and the bee look that great...

Can’t argue with that, Max. Your photos are fantastic and you are quite right that none of them would look nearly as good in B/W. It’s an interesting sideline, though. I’m a huge fan of Ansel Adams’ and Sebastião Salgado’s landscapes.

There's room for both , b/w and colour.
I thought that your black and white photo's were wonderful, AVO.
Never managed to take b/w photos myself as dramatic as those.
You are very talented!
Thanks for sharing them.
