Pigeons nesting under net metering solar panels

Post by kansas »

Just as a matter of interest has anyone had pigeons nesting under the net metering solar panels? The reason I ask is that for the last week we have a couple of canoodling pigeons ducking underneath the panels and coming out again. We can only guess what they may be doing under there!! I wouldn't have thought there's sufficient space for a nest but who knows? We thought that pigeons next in high trees.....

Sooner or later they will be shitting on your panels.

If you are able to, regularly wash them out with a hose pipe

Some people block off the space below the PV panels with wire fencing material.

We had a similar problem but with sparrows.

In the days when you could get stuff from the UK quite cheaply I got some stainless mesh and fixing clips from "Enviroguard". Very effective. Do not use mild steel as it will just stain your roof and walls.

We got plastic netting from the diy and closed the gaps, no more pigeons.

Just remember that these little flying rats can breed up to 4 times a year, so they need to be culled.

Greenair sealed ours with wire as we had a problem. The small birds can still get in, which we don't mind.

Had a huge problem with the flying rats, which included the dreaded breading during covid. Even after netting the solar panel the rat moved to the neighbours roof but came back every day and continues to poop everywhere. Even when the neighbour got their roof the netted, the buggers still came back daily. I was informed the buggers would not leave because they were born of the roof "a homing thing".
professional culling was the only answer.
Cost me a small fortune to replace tiles, paint everywhere etc. to remove the marks/stains left by the bugger's poop.
Also recommend putting spike on any plinths you may have on your roof.

My near neighbour put netting around the base of all the panels, birds were no trouble after that. Make sure the fitters also have low brackets this also good for getting rid of those pigeons.

Until today we hadn't realised just how much mess pigeons make. We'd always thought they just got bad press. A friend helped us removed two nests under the solar panels which included all the poo. Lots and lots of it. Monday morning we will be calling upon a fixer.....
