Sunlight and your Health...

Post by cyprusmax47 »

Many people like to have some hours on the sunbed (I certainly do) in our Cyprus summer, but is it healthy?

I found this video clip which gave me some more information about it and I thought I share it here on the forum as well.

Dr Paul Mason obtained his medical degree with honours from the University of Sydney, and also holds degrees in Physiotherapy and Occupational Health. He is a Specialist Sports Medicine and Exercise Physician.

So, the UV-B concentration in Paphos p.e. at the beach is at these days from 10 AM to 4 PM the highest. So be careful concerning skin cancer. However concerning Vitamin D, your body can produce in less than 20 minutes sun exposure at these hours as much as 15-20.000 IU's through your skin, providing you did not use sun protection cream. In this case no need to buy Vit D pills which come normally with a dose of 1000 IU each.

The only thing which puzzled me was the study which showed that over a long period of time giving test persons Vitamin D pills with only 800 IU daily, when the body is able to produce from sunshine 15-20.000 IU in app 20 minutes. Why not using higher dosage for the study?

High levels of vitamin D in the blood can lead to toxicity and a build-up of calcium. The body naturally regulates the amount of vitamin D produced from sunlight so that you get the right amount, but it can't do that with large amounts from supplements. You shouldn't overdo vitamin D supplementation, and 800 IU should be plenty.
