Bank holiday Monday (Kathara Deftera)

Post by cyprusmax47 »

Green Monday, or 'Clean Monday' (In Greek 'Καθαρά Δευτέρα' /Kathara Deftera) celebrated in Cyprus is the first day of Lent which lasts for 40 days until the Greek Orthodox Easter.
The skies are usually full of colour in the tradition of kite flying, young and old.
As meat, eggs and dairy products are traditionally not eaten during Lent the Green Monday feasts include lots of fresh vegetables, taramasalata, hummus, olives, and tahini. Shellfish and octopus is widely eaten too. However, there are many who mark the occasion without adhering to the Orthodox vegetarian traditions, and many taverns would usually be providing BBQ's for meat lovers too.

I wonder how much the terrible war in Ukraine will dominate the conversations within the families....
