Immersion Heater Element needs replacing

Can anyone recommend someone who can fit new immersion element in a pressurised hot water tank, and what type should we get? Ours has just failed.

It is very straight forward as Tanny said. One Stop should have the spanner.

Most DIY store sell the spanner to change the element, but it isn't as easy, as some on here are making out, some elements have been in place for many years and have corroded in place, you could damage the actual tank, in trying to loosen and remove it. then there is the electrics to think about, if you are not sure get a tradesmen to change it.

Another thing to bear in mind. The spanner to release the immersion-there are two sizes as I found out when I was changing the immersions for people.

By coincidence,am just fitting a new water pressure tank from Leroy Merlin..
This tank has a FLANGE fitting for the immersion,so no corroded thread to worry about in the future...

WHL is spot on. You only have to watch videos on YouTube to realise there is more to this than is first apparent. Not least because once water is realeased from the tank, the shape of the tank can change slightly and this impacts the ease with which the element can be unscrewed. I have had more than one thread ruined by an incompetent tradesman; the outcome being that I had to buy a whole new tank (about €800 from memory, and that was years ago). I will tackle most handyman tasks around the house, but this is one I steer well clear of...and will always pay the little it costs to employ a competent electrician or plumber.

Important also to buy a better-than-normal immersion heater. Buy a cheap one and you might be forever replacing it as it will scale up and blow. S/S is best, but hard to buy in Cyprus. There are intermediate qualities and I would always go for these rather than the cheapest most shops will try to sell you. Sorry Lloyd but Inconel is the material of choice, SS is not the best material in extreme temperature changes and is susceptible to salts. Inconel emersion heaters are available from specialist Plumbers Merchants like Arenco in the old town.
I don't understand why you never had the thread in the emersion boss repaired rather than pay a small fortune for a new tank, where I worked our Fitters would have repaired it. Generally changing an emersion element is straightforward and it points to really poor workmanship if the Boss was distorted as that is very difficult to do.

Had to replace my immersion heater element several times over the years, simple enough to do with the correct tools, some elbow grease and patience. However since replacing my solar panels to the latest more efficient type I have not had to use my immersion once even during the last few months. In fact when first installed I scolded my hand the water was that hot. Agree initially not as cheap as replacing the heating element but after several replacements and the cost of electricity not much more expenditure.

Thanks everyone. We also had a recommendation from our neighbour. The guy came out to fit the new heater element within half an hour with no fuss or bother and charged 80 euros, which is what we paid about 10 years ago when our first element failed.

Re Leroy Merlin.....their tank Immersion heater comes with two Sacrificial Anodes....
