Russia invades... what now?
So, after all the posturing over recent weeks it seems Short Man Syndrome took over.
Has Cyprus made any sanctions as yet?
The UK Government have barely scratched the surface with theirs...

Cyprus has always had warm relations with Russia, so don't expect them to put any sanctions of their own,
Cyprus is one of 27 countries in the EU,,,,,
they will do what the EU decides.
Re: Russia invades... what now?
Yes, probably sanctions are the last thing that both banks and property developers want!
They will need to keep a low profile though, while Cyprus should continue to support the EU in this...

Yes, our UK Prime Minister must really be seeing this diversion as a blessing in disguise. It couldn't have come at a better time.

This was Biden during his press conference…I’m not sure what He thinks is funny about the situation!
Re: Russia invades... what now?
My heart goes out to the Ukrainian people, no one deserves what's happening to them now.

Perhaps if you watched the press conference rather than a single still of it, you would find out.The Aquila wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 10:34 am This was Biden during his press conference…I’m not sure what He thinks is funny about the situation!

How much does Cyprus rely on Russia for gas? That's the most relevant question for a lot of us.

Re: Russia invades... what now?
Facebook posting but pretty much sums up the situation:
Best description of Russian and Ukraine conflict.
For your friends who don’t read the news and wanna know why
RUSSIA v UKRAINE ‘22 is happening.
—
The Ukraine & Russia crisis In simple terms for those that have no
idea what is going on.
-Ukraine used to be in an abusive relationship with Russia, feeding
him, letting him use her car & giving him whatever he asked for
until she built up the confidence to call it quits back in 1991
-Since then Ukraine has been working on herself, becoming a
strong independent woman with help from friends like France,
America, Poland etc. offering her support, loaning her money, &
helping her find her way.
-Ukraine has been enjoying being single for 30 years & looking
forward to continuing to grow & create new friendships.
-Now Russia being the toxic Ex that it is wants her back, and
doesn’t want her meeting new people or creating any new
relationships.
-A couple of weeks ago Russia started sitting in the front of
Ukraine’s house & when her friends ask him what was he doing
there, he said “Oh nothing, just getting a little bit of exercise in,
that’s all.”
-After her friends told her that Russia was potentially getting ready
to do something bad to her, he said “They’re lying, they just want
you to be scared of me & that’s not what it is”
-Yesterday Russia broke into Ukraine’s house, beating her up &
“taking advantage” of her while on Livestream & double dog
daring any of her friends to do something about it & if they do
want the smoke, Russia got that thang on him.
So there it is.

Cheers

Cyprus did not oppose any sanctions against Russia says finance minister
Cyprus did not oppose any EU sanctions against Russia, the finance ministry said on Saturday, responding to reports in local and international media suggesting the island was among the EU member states who tried to stop the sanctions.
In a tweet early Saturday, Finance Minister Constantinos Petrides wrote that “in the name of EU unity and solidarity to Ukrainian people, Cyprus has NOT objected to ANY EU sanctions including cutting Russia off Swift”.
“Everything is on the table,” he said.
EU leaders responded to the Russian invasion of Ukraine with economic sanctions on Russia at an emergency summit on Thursday night. Envoys of the EU’s 27 member states also agreed to freeze any European assets of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The sanctions decided so far did not include the cutting off of the country from the global Swift financial system.
Petrides’ statements came as a protest is scheduled in Nicosia, by Ukrainians in Cyprus, who announced that Cyprus, along with Hungary, Italy and Germany, are blocking the adoption of hard EU sanctions against Russia.
The demonstration is scheduled for 12pm outside the presidential palace.

Re: Russia invades... what now?
Good! Thanks for the above posts which should help 'scotch' any unfounded rumours, as to Cyprus's support for the EU sanctions.Hopefully it will also calm and reassure the many Ukranians who live here,
Let's hope that the sanctions will work. Though it's plain that Putin will stop at nothing to try to get his own way. His behaviour in the last couple of days is on a par with other notorious dictators who have gone before.
Will the Russian public dare to rise up against him...

Re: Russia invades... what now?
Katya Adler has just posted Italy,Ireland, the Netherlands,Germany and Belgium have closed there air space to Russia and the move is expected to be formalised EU wide this afternoon.
Re: Russia invades... what now?
I just heard on the BBC news that Russian aircraft are now banned from flying or landing, over all of EU countries airspace. This will presumably also be in effect here in Cyprus from now on.
However 3 Russian flights landed at Larnaca and Paphos airports today. 2 were Aeroflot.
Now Putin has put his Nuclear forces on readiness, from what I heard in the news report
God knows what will happen.
Just pray that Putin will only use this as a general threat..

Re: Russia invades... what now?
Yup!
There will be a lack of Russian tourists coming into Cyprus by the sounds of it....
I wonder if that certain rather expensive private yacht will soon be on the list of blocked transport?
No wonder the EU have put their foot down

Re: Russia invades... what now?
Sweden has announced it will send military equipment and other aid to Ukraine.
Announcing the move, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said it would be the first time Sweden had sent weapons to a country in conflict since the Soviet invasion of Finland in 1939.
Swedish military have been monitoring the airspace over the Baltic sea since it all kicked off last week.

Re: Russia invades... what now?
Everyone is jumping on the get behind Ukraine bandwagon now.....
I bet Volodymyr Valenskyy is wondering what the hell he took on - from a politician, actor and a comedian to heading one of the biggest fights in Europe for many a year.
I thought Gordon Brown had a whole lot of crap to deal with as the new UK PM some years ago, but Volodymyr has definitely shown his mettle.

Re: Russia invades... what now?
Lloyd: your last paragraph....
A discussion me and my other half were also having yesterday.
No, those Generals didn't look convinced one little bit. Putin can't push the button as I understand it, he can only give the order.
It feels like a bad move on his part....
A new Twitter account was set up yesterday. It's tracking all those private Oligarchs aircraft...
