MOT & Tax car from abroad

Post by J B »

Our friends have a car at their house in Tala

It is out out of MOT and will need taxing in January, but they are based in the UK and have no plans to visit CY till the C19 situation has subsided

It has not moved since February and is parked outdoors.

They are considering asking a friend to deal with it but are concerned that if there is a problem with the MOT, it will be more of an issue than they would like to impose on their friend. (would the tyres have perished in that time?)

Any suggestions??

A mobile mechanic might give it a look over for them, and get it MOT, they then can tax it online.

It depends on how old the tyres are, if it's parked in full sunlight etc, surely the friend can see any wear, damage etc.

Answering all the questions to the best of my abilities ...

The car is reasonably new, not an 'old banger' and the tyres are in good order.

It is parked off road in the complex 'designated parking space'

The insurance is suspended to just fire & theft

How does one go about putting it on SORN?

If it's parked off road no need to worry as long as they MOT and Tax it within 3 years, as after 3 years they will have to pay to re-register the car.

They would have to pay the back tax if they do not do a SORN.

But, can you drive it to the MOT station without tax?

I am not sure if its legal, certainly the driver will need to be insured to drive that car, but many do (I have) drive for an mot without tax as without an Mot it cant be taxed.
if the car is booked in at an MOT station and the police pull you over you can call the MOT station to confirm that you had an appointment. As you may know the cops are a lot easier going than the cops in the UK, some people moan about them but the system works when it needs to :D

Yes you can take it to an MOT station if its pre booked it does not need road tax, you do need insurance though so the car would have to be insured by the owner for his use and if it's not insured for any driver then anyone with insurance in their name on another car could drive this one but it would be third party insurance only.
I checked this all out this year as I took my friends for an MOT in September.
