Re: Formally called !
Formally or formerly? BIG difference! A number of the places you mention were formerly called by a different name but may continue using both the current and the former names. E.g. Constantinople is still used today for Istanbul by the Greek communities in the city. The name İstanbul (Turkish pronunciation: [isˈtanbuɫ] ), colloquially [ɯsˈtambuɫ]) is commonly held to derive from the Medieval Greek phrase "εἰς τὴν Πόλιν" (pronounced [is tim ˈbolin]), which means "to the city"[30] and is how Constantinople was referred to by the local Greeks (Wiki)

Thanks ever so much for pointing out my error Devil.
You are very clever and observant.

Tough audience Memory Man - it's pretty obvious from the context what you mean. Slightly confused by Cambodia though. I deal with a large company there on a daily basis, and I'm pretty sure it's still called "Cambodia"!

Re: Formally called !
I can only go with the quiz site answers, but I've just checked
and found this with a Google search.
Kampuchea
On January 5, 1976, Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot announces a new constitution changing the name of Cambodia to Kampuchea and legalizing its Communist government.

Re: Formally called !
I stand happily corrected. Not sure many of the locals I deal with have got the memo about the name change though
Re: Formally called !
Cambodia is no longer called Kampuchea.

I worked there for a short while in the 90s. Fascinating but tragic place. Locals had a great sense of humour. I loved exploring the ancient ruins but you needed a guide in those days. I remember teaching mine how to get a better price from the beer sellers by guaranteeing to take tourists to a particular vendor in return for a discount. That discount would then become a bigger tip for the tour guide at the end of the tour. He was well happy with that nugget.
14. Ho Chi Minh City
18. Stalingrad
