HIC,
If, it were only the older generation who have very real fears and anger over what happened in 1974, one could hope that as they eventually die off, younger generations would become less extreme and more willing to endorse a possible sensible, negotiated settlement which would benefit everyone on this island. But unfortunately, the GC state schools here have refused to update the history books to give a truer picture based on recorded historical facts. In addition many of the elderly teachers still teaching in school, have their own bitter and twisted view which they impart to the kids. So, younger generations are indoctrinated at an early age and are often just as radicalised as their seniors. Interestingly, in the North the TC’s have already updated their school history books which cover the period of ‘The troubles’. So some of those children tend not to be so radical in their beliefs and attitudes.
This info came from a teacher who has returned to Cyprus from abroad where he was teaching at schools in various strife ridden countries. Since his return he has become involved with the inter communal projects which take place in the buffer zone where he helps to encourage childen of both communities to come together and work together on projects which aim to foster confidence by getting to know their counterparts from the ‘other side’. He said that so far he has suceeded with several thousand young people from both communities who have worked together and made new friends. But this work has to be sponsored privately by grants and donations as the Govt hasn’t contributed financially.

Think this one out and what could happen!

A US oil company starts drilling for oil for the R.O.C.

Erdogan sends a Turkish navy ship and they shoot at the rig.

Then the USA military sends in a couple of destroyers, an aircraft carrier and a submarine for good measure!

Turkish ship then run like hell that’s if they have not been sunk all ready!

Be careful Erdogan!

Let’s hope this scenario doesn’t happen for real.. Turkey has repeatedly said that the oil belongs to all the Cypriots not just to those in the ROC... The presence of Turkish ships in the drilling area presumably backs his statement that Turkey won’t allow the extraction of oil unless it is going to be shared and will thus benefit the whole island not just part of it.

This is why a sensible and lasting settlement of the Cyprus question is so important.
The EU, NATO, the UN,the Americans and most every other nation are keen for this to happen. Apart possibly from the Russians who are already exporting their oil to Europe and except for some elements of the local population and the Greek church here. This anti attitude also fanned by some extreme politicians.
