Complain as we do, I never see constructive solutions to address the problems. Low employment skills, no discipline, low educational achievement, low family values, few role models, lack of parental skills, disgraceful lack of affordable housing which fuels the benefits culture, no apprenticeships etc. etc. If you leave things to their own devices with no serious investment or intention to tackle these issues then you will get nothing but more of the same and worst.

It seems to me that it all boils down to two things, lack of parental control and lack of punishment. When we had capital and corporal punishment, we didn't have the horrendous crime rate that we have at present. A murder was front page news for weeks, young people who might have committed crimes were too afraid of the punishment they would have received.

Some would say that I was too strict with my children, but they have turned out to make me very proud without exception, as have my grandchildren. If they were deliberately naughty, they had a slap, not beaten, but just to let them know how far they could go and no further. Do I regret the way I bought them up ? definitely NO.

But Cactus, you only picked bits out of my post - you didn't say if you also experienced the other stuff such as.... Low employment skills, no discipline, low educational achievement, low family values, few role models, lack of parental skills. Perhaps these things would have affected your future had you experienced the same. People can hark back to tough times but I don't think they compare to living with no father (or for that fact any male role model), a mother who is a crack addict on an inner city slump estate with absolutely zero encouragement to do well at school. I doubt this resonates with many people's experiences of childhood - albeit a poor one or without many of today's luxuries as I also experienced myself. My point is really that people can continue to place blame, to make comparisons to days gone by but meanwhile, these serious problems which are growing and it seems are still not accepted as 'real' by many, will only, as I said before, continue to get much worse.

I do think you are still missing the point. Who taught you the manners? If you have no one around you to instil them in you - then what is the answer? I'm not condoning or excusing any of it - just trying to look at ways to stop it. Is it governments responsibility, schools??? How do we actual deal with it rather than complain about it. It's there and it's real and if we ignore it - it will only get worse.
